Title: K&S bearings and seals, any feedback?
Post by: 05450r on July 04, 2013, 02:34:18 PM
So I had some discounts to use from Boss Bearing, from a previous build. So I decided to order their complete engine bearing, seal and gasket kit made by K&S. Will also be ordering their wheel bearing and swingarm kit since I got more discounts from the engine kit. Has anyone used the engine kit,I will be getting oem crank bearings and seals but how about the rest of the kit?

I used them on a stock engine rebuild I did about 5yrs ago. I used the crank bearings and seals and never had a problem.

I am a firm believer in OEM crank seals and OEM 8 ball crank bearings.

I agree, this will mainly be a TT motor,265pv,it will be pulling some consistant upper rpm's at times.

I used the K&S gasket set once and I will only use OEM or Cometic now. Lets us know what you think of the gaskets.

I have used K&S kits before.  But I don't use the crank seals or bearings I only use oem there.  The rest of the bearings and seals from k&s have been good quality.  I have not put 20 years on them like oem so time will tell.

Got the kit in today, start assembly tomorrow if the kids allow me some free time, lol! Everything looks good, crank bearings are 8 ball design. Im going to use those and the crank seals,so I will be a test mule for this. Bearings going on a new Hot Rod crank as well. I will take notes and some pics to use in by build thread.

I've used them a couple of times with no problems. Just remember to grease the lips of the seals(especially the mains).

Good, thank you Mennis! Yep,always lube the seals! I should get started on this today, mainly getting stuff cleaned up and laid out on the bench. Got my stainless bolt kit in yesterday. I have almost 10hrs (not straight hrs) cleaning, stripping and repainting my cases,so atleast that parts done

Got the bearings in the cases,no issues. Left them in the freezer for 3 days, while the cases sat in the hot garage. Drove them in with minimal effort, all good so far!

i accidentally used a k&s when bolting on a cylinder and at one point spilled gas or something on the cylinder it leaked down and sort-of dissolved the gasket.lol

Update, and Im taking this as a sign from the 250r gods. Got tranny built and installed, triple checked everything. Go to open the package for the gaskets, being careful I slowly peal the plastic away from the cardboard and of course, the center case gasket and stator cover gasket stick and immediately tore. UGH!!.. Call Boss Bearing, they say send the whole kit back and they will ship a new one. She tried telling me I had to take my bearings back out, yeah right!!... After talking to her supervisor I just had to email pictures of the gaskets and they will issue a refund and Im supposed to repurchase the kit. Yeah right!!

That blows man, I may have a center gasket. Let me check when I get home from work and I'll just ship it to ya. How bad did it tear up the stator gasket, you may be able to run it till the new one comes.

Thank you Rupp250 I appreciate it but my buddy is hooking me up with a center gasket while I wait. I have extra stator gaskets but it just sucks. They did refund me $30 for the two gaskets already. Its was a bummer cause I was waiting on the dowel pins to come in all week, picked them up this morning all excited to get the bottom end together but nope!

I once purchased that kit from Boss. I didn't like the quality of the gaskets. The bearings may be good, but I went with all OEM. Good luck!

That sux. I've never had any problems with their stuff. I usually won't run anything other than an oem centercase gasket(99% of the time) though LOL. The main thing of theirs I've used is the seal kits, but have used the gaskets before too. Like I said, I've never had any problems and have used there center case gasket on a cr500(and I think I did on a R motor too once) before. I'm always super careful when opening that stuff. I HATE how they package it though. Maybe the heat got to it and made it stick to the package? IDK. I always prefer oem, but yeah I've used their stuff, especially when I knew I was just gonna use it for a little while(I usually keep a bunch of spare gaskets around).  Luckily, Sandtrax here in Tulsa has a gasket making printer(it even cuts it out for you) and can make ya pretty much any gasket you need(besides a head gasket). I'll admit to saving a few bucks on occasion, but on some things it just isn't worth it. Good luck and I'm glad to hear you were able to find a replacement.

Im sure the package was a little warm from sitting in the garage. I just dont understand the point of why they package gaskets that way. O'well lessoned learned, and Im hemroging money on this build anyways LOL!!
