Title: Difference between clutch covers and kick start assembly

Can anyone tell the difference between the 86/87 an 88/89 clutch covers and kick start assembly trying to figure out if I'm missing something

Can you guys post pics I think I'm missing the spacer was told the bottom end was a 88 but I think it was built with leftover parts

Isn't the difference just in the cover? 85-87 has a removable spacer on the kicker spindle while the 88-89 cover has the spacer built into the cover. You could also get on partzilla & look up the part numbers for the kicker assembly & see if there the same across the years but I think the only difference was in the covers.

We did find out there is a difference between the spindle and the clutch covers themselves

Did some research & your right about the spindle, there's an 85-87 kicker spindle & 88-89 spindle. Same goes for the kicker gear, different part numbers for the 2 engines. I have both styles & can take measurements if you'd like. Also have a couple spare assemblies for the 85-87 style set-up if you have an earlier cover.

might be worth while to search it and or bring it over here. I know Tony posted some good pictures of the differences on the old old site when he was talking about polishing covers. Kev is right, spacer and built in spacer. i didnt know the spindles and gears were different
