Title: Motor ideas???
Post by: mwiley on October 26, 2017, 10:57:14 PM
So, my bike has been sitting in pieces for the last 2 years because of life. I took the motor apart because it needed the top end freshened up and I wanted to fix the cases, cyro the tranny, etc. Just never got it done. So, 2 weeks ago I bought my 16 year old son his first 250r and now I need to quit screwing around and finish my bike so we can ride. My question for everyone is based on experience what kind of motor build w/pipe would you guys recommend for a do it all bike. We will be trail riding, visiting Silver Lake sand dunes, and if he wants we might hit up a mx track or look for some XC stuff.  I have decided against using my old ported stock cylinder because it looks like it was a learning tool for someone and I need to buy a pipe anyways, so in my mind I might as well get a bb pipe!!! I already have a 38mm carb, boyseen rad valve and a 01 CR ignition. I have actually thought about seeing if Eddie Sanders is going to offer the same deal he had last year with a set of cases and one of his 363 cylinders in a motor builders package but wondered if that would be too much for the woods? I have also thought about seeing if I could swing for a CPI sphinx cylinder in the 330cc range. I know this would probably be the most expensive route. Let me know what you guys think.

Call led. Go with his recommendation.  If it’s too expensive, go with esr.  I personally like 330-350cc range.  I’ve ridden tight dune trails in Oregon, but no experience with tight woods back east.

That kick but ESR kit is available right now. Just ask for it to be set up for woods use but remember a woods set up and a dunner set up are very different. You need to give on one to help the other. Today I don't think a sphinx will be recommended over an esr for woods use unless the seller makes more profit on the sale of a cpi over an esr. For woods the added trx7 port, trx7b pipe, race gas dome if possible and maybe consider a flywheel weight for the cr ignition. More versatile for dune use too you may go trx5b.

Sphinx are excellent cylinders. But the esr prices are outstanding, and pretty good quality and reliability, so I'd personally pick esr.

I have a sphynx 363 which I love but is it really worth the extra $600 for an additional 6hp hard to say
