Title: Who’s still racing?
Post by: rablack21 on April 04, 2018, 08:07:37 AM
Who out there is still racing mx?
I’m considering a comeback. Am I crazy? Lol. My son is getting a little older. It’s starting to get a little easier to take him places. He’ll be 1 year old next month. I’ve been getting back into shape. Just wanted to seen if anyone  else out there is still racing?

I'll be out there soon.  Waiting on shocks from SF. Should be at the open practice listed below once I do. He's almost a year old already?!

You saw my post last night....making the comeback! I wouldn't say we are crazy as we enjoy being out on the track but as we get a little older we "attack" things from a different perspective.

Mentally I'm ready but physically I'm shot. I know that will come with seat time and actually going outside and doing more physical work but this weather will not break and I do not feel like working on the R with freezing fingers.

So, whats the set up for this year Ryan? Any major changes to the machine?

Well I won't be racing MX, but I'll be racing XC hopefully mid-summer and into the fall. I'm in decent shape and at my lowest weight in over a year. Still have 10lbs to go.

It's been cold and shitty out for so long that I haven't had a chance to touch the R. Plus I've been trying to finish up this whole house remodel. So the quad is on the back burner for now

Outstanding on the weight loss! I’m right behind ya. Got 23 lbs to go! I just started prepping my quad. So I might be a little ahead of ya there.

Hey, we’ll figure it out together Joe. I worry that my body will give out too. I totally  agree on the different attack perspective.

I haven’t really made any major changes, although some are untested. I have barely gotten to run/race this latest 363 motor. Got a basically new led 350g pipe I haven’t ran much either. I got some new shrouds coming from Michael Systema that I looked forward to. They are very similar to the old Walsh style one that funnel air directly into the radiator air fins.
I’m also trying to get a new intake and airbox setup from Troy Robl to open up the airflow. That’s about it.

I like that set up troy is making. Can't wait till its ready. I'm running an ESR intake and it works well, I think but I need an airbox to stop the water and mud. I DNF too many times because I picked up some water and the engine did not want to run.

I should pick up a BB from Eddie soon. I'll ask this in the engine forum but I'll ask it here as well. How much different in power between the 330 and 350 with similar port match from ESR. Is it work going all out for the Big bore or will the smaller 330 get the job done? Whats the trade off? Is there a trade off?

I will be doing some MX play riding, no serious racing.  I did pick up a stealthy flywheel weight for my CR ignition.  So that will help alot.

Oh i know it helps.  Alot actually.  I used to have one on my MX 363.  Although i think the stealthy i got will be a better one that my old one.

Alright, I’m doing it fellas, I’m setting my sights on racing mx again. Nothing crazy, hopefully get back out there. Got a few things to prepare: get a new helmet, frame chain guide, skid plate, shock covers. Then should be good to go!

Sat is the first race. If I am feeling good enough i'm going to race another series the same night. I think I have something wrong with my head cuz I know I'm not going to last the first moto let alone 4 motos plus practices! its almost here and looking forward to reading all the updates.

Any recommendations on a cheap sports camera? I hear there are some decent ones out there for a good price.

Ahh snap! It’s going down! Lol. In all seriousness Joe, don’t push it too hard. Last time I did that my grip gave out and I can off the back of the quad during a race. My butt and back still have nightmares of it. Lol. Look forward to reading the reviews.

My experiences with the cheaper action cameras has been pretty bad. I tried to skimp on them at first but still ended up buying a GoPro. I would have been better off buying a GoPro to start

This has been my experience as well. The picture was crappy on mine.

getting there.   I jacked up my L4/L5 in a car wreck last November, doctors say it could take up to 18 months to heal, if it even does heal.  The last month or so has been much better, but it makes me nervous and conscious to not over do it.

my son and I practiced at a MX track on saturday.  first time on a track in probably 4-5 years.  it was a blast although my back started hurting on landing big jumps towards the end of the day, which is concerning.   today Im sore as @#$% but at the same time i feel great!

I can tell you I totally miss it, I raced MX for about 20+yrs until I finally had one nasty crash in my thirty's. I came back and raced a couple more times after I healed up but I wasn't able to race at the same level due to mind games. I figured paying my house payment & taking care of my family was more important than taking a chance of spending my days in the hospital again so I retired from MX. Its all good thou, I open up the R whenever I get a chance at the dunes to get the heart pumping again. Not the same as competing but still fun.
