First R for me. I've wanted one since jr high and I turn 30 next week so it definitely took me a while haha. Seems to be a solid quad as far as moving parts go. The frame is garbage and unfortunately I didn't realize that until the day after I bought it. Anyways, I'm pretty happy to finally own one. I am going to be busy for the remainder of summer cutting trails through 40 acres of woods. Anyone around North Alabama let me know. Would like to have some extra knowledge around as well as another R. Feel free to give advice! I'm a gear head and wrench turner on everything from rock crawlers to street cars, but as I said this is my first R. Help is always appreciated.
It's a 1988.

That sounds about right haha and thanks!
Anyone know how much trouble I should expect finding a decent used frame? Can't really swing a big name aftermarket at the moment.

what's wrong with the current frame? cracks? bent?

Hairline cracks in the typical places, but one side of the lower frame where the bottom most engine bolt goes through is completely missing. Maybe a 4" section of tubing plus the actual engine mount tab are just gone. I feel like an idiot for not noticing it and getting the price lowered.
I will get a pic uploaded asap. I really want to ride in the mean time so hopefully I can weld something up to hold me over.

Welcome to the site! Post up a pic of the missing section when you can.

Thanks! Really enjoyed your build thread.
Here is the gaping hole I somehow missed...
-
Nice quad! I was going to suggest you could salvage that frame with a gusset kit & repair cracks. But that missing section though

Thanks! Yea it's a bummer for sure. It could maybe be patched up, but not sure it's even worth the time.

some flat stock and a gusset kit and you will be set.

I have a wrecked frame I could cut that section out of for you. It could be that whole tube.

Welcome.nice machine/Parts list..you should post up a wanted add with your location I’m sure you’ll get some hits.frames are around.ive also had frames shipped from west coast to nyc for under $100 using greyhound..that works if both you guys have access to a depot nearby..
-
You guys are awesome. I really appreciate all the help here.
Croat1 that is hard to beat for $50! I will use that, regardless of which route I take to fix or replace.
Hickwheeler, that would be most excellent. You can PM me and I'm sure we can work something out.
Action69, Thanks! and good call. I will post up in the classifieds.
Thanks again fellas.

Welcome aboard. I have done a few frame repairs and have found it to not be as hard as I originally thought. The lower frame rails are 22mm, but 7/8" square tube is an almost perfect fit. I would suggest pulling the engine out and buying a gusset kit from pumashine. I cut out both of the lower engine mount tubes and replaced them. Then set a spare set of cases in the frame so I could line up the new mounts. It came out perfect. Enjoy, Loren

Excellent advice Loren, thank you.
Are there any manuals for the 250r that have exploded diagrams? Would be nice to see proper assembly as far as small items like washers and such.
-
I believe there is a downloadable manual in the tech section

Welcome aboard & congrats on getting an R. Like the norm said frame repairs aren't too difficult just be sure to remove the ignition before you do any welding on the frame.
-
nice bike with a little patience welding and grinding you can patch that hole with great results.
-
Broken1, Douglas, thanks guys. I’m feeling a lot better about this repair. Feeling even better that I found this forum. Everyone has been more than friendly and helpful.
Hickwheeler messaged me about sending me a piece of frame for the repair and I will send him a text tomorrow and see what we can get rolling.
I’ve been in the garage for the last couple hours setting up my front suspension correctly. Caster, camber and toe should be proper now. It was all thrown together very poorly, but it’s nothing that can’t be corrected.
Thanks again for all the comments and help guys. Really appreciated.
-
I bet if @Pumashine see's this he can get you everything you need for the repair and all of the other gussets. We've seen frames way worse than that get repaired. But that's a great start for a 250r!

Man it sure feels good to hear that. I was a little bummed that maybe the deal wasn't so great after finding the busted frame, but if it's easily fixed that's great. The rest of the quad seems to be pretty solid. It has fired up every single time I've kicked it on the first try.
Can't say thanks enough. You guys rock.
-
Front engine mounts ordered from Pumashine. Realized one of mine was broken. The .120" 304SS should last a lifetime.
I will be ordering the gusset kit as soon as I have a plan in motion to fix the frame.
-
Tighten all the engine mounting bolts & suspension mounting bolts to the torque spec in the manual, keep the headstay in place & check them all once in awhile & you shouldn't have anymore frame issues unless you like to jump like Dale Renny.

I figured there was suppose to be something on those bracket on and around the head.. looks like someone had plenty of money for parts and lack of ability or caring when it came to assembly, but I’m used to it after the projects I’ve picked up from others. I’m almost done with the front suspension and I will work my way back.
Thanks for the heads up Broken1. I was unaware of the headstay. I will buy one ASAP. Would anyone recommend the billet ESR piece?

Man, that is tempting. Seems like a solid price.
What's the scoop on me using a early model frame? SOmething with the rear engine mount and swingarm versus being frame mounted as my rear mount is.
-
Foot peg mounting seems different as well. Hmm.. doing some homework.
I really hate to spend any more honestly and I still need helmet and boots and new tires.. Dang. I wanna be rich when I grow up! ;D

it is actually a great price, considering it already has a Pumashine gusset kit and is powdercoated. you will spend that getting your current frame up to speed.

Your logical thinking is killing me right now. I do have a beach trip coming up for my bday though and could stand to save the money for that.. Decisions, decisions.
I will say working at a company where I deal with freight all day has informed me that something of that nature has maybe a 50% chance of showing up bent or demolished.
-
If you replace your 88 frame with an 86 frame most of your parts will interchange but there are some 86 specific parts you will need for it. While they look almost identical there are differences. The 86 is basically a stand alone year & the 87 frame geometry is more like the 88 & 89.
-
getting a frame ready to go will have many benefits; opposed to fixing the one you have. it could be very laborious to get your current frame to spec. if it has been ridden alot with cracks in it the frame might be twisted way out of tolerance and would be difficult to fix.
just one guys opinion.
-
I'm going to have to do some more research on the differences. I need a proper frame, but I will have to see what a frame and any differences might cost me. I will fix mine either way. It can hold me over until I can find a nicer one hopefully. Thanks for the help guys.
-
Looking like the 86 frame is a no go. I'm just not willing to do all the mods to make my swingarm work and definitely don't want to buy another one for the 86 frame.
-
I would fix what you have. It really is an easy job.
-
I would fix what you have. It really is an easy job.
I think that is the way I should go as well. I'm sure my frame is tweaked a bit, but I'm not a racer or doing anything serious so I think some welding and the gusset kit will serve me well. I'm kind of a fix what I got type of guy anyway.
-
If you have access to a wirefeed welder you shouldn't have any trouble. I couldn't find any 7/8" square tube locally so I ordered a 3' stick from online metals. The price per foot is ridiculous, but they had it. Make sure you remove your stator before you start welding on the frame. I remove the engine and use a set of junk cases for perfect line up.
-
Yes I have a friend with a Miller and I can weld it myself.
Hickwheeler is going to be sending me a section of frame that I will use for the repair. Should be pretty straight forward. I will weld up any cracks as well as a gusset kit and hopefully have it ready for cooler weather. I'm ready to ride!
-
Well, frame is warped and cracked everywhere. Just going to search for a new one. Wish I had bought the 86 on ebay. Now that I know the differences in years I realize I have an 86 swingarm and an 88 frame. Looks like this might cost me some money if I have to gusset and powdercoat one myself. Dang!! Makes me mad for hesitating to buy the one that was available for such a good deal.
-
you might want to contact Pumashine and ask if he has a frame for sale. I recall him working on several a while ago.
-
Thanks I will do that. Just received my 304SS engine mounts from him on Saturday. Very nice pieces.
-
your first warning sign would have been those rear tires. The small section after the "V" should be on the inside, not the outside. or at least thats how i have always seen it
crazy its missing such a big chuck of frame! oversights happen. one time I got excited when I found an aftermarket framed R with protrax front end. only after I had the quad a couple weeks did I realize it was not a narrow front!! d'oh
-
Haha I've seen tires mounted backwards and what not plenty, I don't think it had much to do with the quad or the owner. He was a big guy, but I have a feeling it was cracked before he owned it. Totally my fault for not seeing it, but I am still beyond happy with the quad. Everything else seems to be really nice and it ran so good the one time I got to ride it haha.
I found a nice frame in Missouri but had to basically beg the guy just to respond to me that he wouldn't ship. Really annoying when someone can't just text a simple reply of "no". Anyways, I'm not sure if I want to do that drive again or even do business with the guy so I am still searching. Hope I find something soon. I really want to ride!
-
Looks like I'm going to take a trip to the midwest to pick up a frame. It's stock but looks great and it is cheap. Going to gusset it myself and have it powder coated red. I really hope the gusset kit stops the cracks. Would be a bummer to pay for powder coating only to find another crack.
Any tips for changing to a race fuel dome? Seems like my engine runs rich as is. ANyways, going to use the race dome and 110 octane Renegade. I can get it for the same price I'm paying for 100LL avgas. Hoping to pick up some bottom end grunt. Really wish I had a TRX7 setup as opposed to the TRX11. It's definitely no dog, but you can never have to much bottom end.
-
I repaired to cracks in my frame when I tore it down. I have had no issues since after doing the gussets
-
That's good to know. Turns out the great condition, no crack frame in Missouri was complete junk. Oval holes and cracks everywhere. So the search continues.
-
There is currently an 86 motor on eBay in NJ and the guy said he’s parting the whole machine.that could be an option for you..
-

-
Thanks Action69! I messaged him. Also messaged the two sellers with stock 86 frames for $500 plus $200 shipping.. Made an offer. If a bone stock 30 year old frame is going to cost $500 I'd rather spend another $1500 and buy aftermarket.
-
Want to thank everyone who has been so helpful to a stranger. Hickwheeler, ATVGuy and all of you commenting here and on the other site. Thankful to have you guys looking out for sure. Hope to return the favor for another R owner one day.
-
Be patient one will pop up,you don’t want to overpay.ive gotten titled frames from $200-$500 for one with fresh PC and gusseted.I would post a wanted add people are always sitting on Parts.
-
Good advice. I don't think I could bring myself to spend $500 on a 30yr old OEM frame. If one pops up again gusseted and coated I will be ready. I'm still upset that I missed the other one by one day because I thought I needed an 88.
-
your post here says the quad is an 88, but you have a post asking for 86/87. which one do you want? The swingarm mount is main difference. sent you a pm on one I found via search tempest
-
My frame is an 88, but it turns out it has an 86/87 swingarm and rear engine mount. Either one will work honestly but I would prefer an 88.
-
That is a super nice frame! We will see if he's willing to ship it.
-
Here's a question for the guru's.. Is the lower rear engine mount not used on an 88/89? I know they have the rear crossbar but that is only for the upper rear mount. I have heard the late model frames had tabs on the frame for the lower rear mount. I've yet to see a single frame with those tabs. I've yet to see a pic of any 88/89 model with a lower rear mount. Am I missing something or do they just not use that mounting point on the engine?
-
88-89 frame doesn't have tabs for the lower rear engine mount, just the upper. As you already know an 86-87 swinger will fit an 88-89 frame using the 86-87 rear mount with the top tabs cut off but if you use an 88-89 swinger on an 86-87 frame some type of rear mount has to be fabbed & welded to the frame.
-
So the lower rear mounting hole in the engine is NOT used on an 88/89? That's what I had gathered, but I didn't find much supporting evidence through Google. Thanks for the tip.
I am a bit surprised the after market makes 88/89 style swingarms at all.
-
Any ideas on the difference between 86- 87/88/89 shock linkage? I have a lowering link and want to get rid of it.
I know the 86 link is different from the 87/88/89. Is the only difference the length of dog bone? I have heard conflicting info about the bushing/bolt size.
-
86 is longer then a 87. I dont have any 88-89 to compare.
-
Only difference is the 86 had a longer dog bone 87-89 was the same
-
Thanks guys. I have the lowering link adjusted to 7" eye to eye. Best I can tell that is factory for the 86. I have the 18.5" swingarm. Need to find out which shock I have.
Aluminum color body. Navy blue coil. Engraved "CT Shaw"
EDIT: I think I should adjust my link 1" shorter to match my -1" swingarm. (18.5" is 86/87 and 19.5" is 88/89 swingarm)
If anyone can throw a tape measure on a dog bone for me I would appreciate it. I think 7" may be the length of 88/89 dogbone so 6" should be 86/87. (center of bolt hole to center of bolt hole)
-
You have your lengths mixed up for years. 88-9 are 18.5 and 86-7 are 19.5
-
Dang you're right Hickwheeler, thank you.
I have found a couple of frames. looks like I'm going to be spending about $500 on a completely stock frame. That sucks!
-
If your patient the right deal might pop up but getting the R bug doesn't help any.
-
Yea, I can't believe it's this hard to get a decent one. The whole collector part of it sucks, but I guess it's one of the things that make these R's so cool. There definitely isn't one on every street.
-
looks like I found a frame. I am pumped!!!

That's great news! Looking forward to seeing how it goes swapping all your parts over to it.

and the addiction begins. Welcome or should I say run lol. this bike is addictive for sure.

-
Haha yep. It is keeping my attention a lot more than some of my previous toys.
The swap should go quick. I think I can have it together in a few hours. I can’t wait to hear pop pop and smell the premix!
It’s down to a bear frame now but here is a pic. Swingarm bolt went easily. I also did a little polishing on the side covers. They should clean up pretty good.
-
A build thread would be cool
