Title: 2Nubs's boondock build
Post by: 2Nubs on August 02, 2018, 11:28:36 AM
Been getting some good help from several members here. Think it might be helpful for me to make my own thread and maybe cool to look back on one day and see where I started.

Most of you know the run down. Bought this and afterwards realized the frame was junk. Its completely disassembled right now so of course I found things that should be fixed before re-assembly. Hopefully I can have it back going in a week or so. I've not even put a tank through this thing, but I can honestly say I know it from top to bottom and side to side. Everything is getting a good cleaning as well. Sand gets into everything!

This is what started the tear down..

Hopefully my replacement frame will be on the way tomorrow. Ceaserthethird sold me a cherry looking '86 frame. I also took the time to rebuild the petcock with OEM rubber, new clear Helix fuel lines, high flow filter, and a new screen in the tank.

Things I still need are a lower engine mount bolt and nut. One bolt for caliper to brake stay. One bolt for parking brake block off. New tires (not many options for a 10" rear wheel). One bolt for a arm to frame. Full set of chain sliders/rollers.

You mean like the swingarm? I think they might just need a shot of grease. The needles seem good. The a arms seem like new and will also receive grease. There is also a steering stem bearing, correct? Seems like there is some linkage bearings that aren't manufactured anymore as well.. Thanks for the help!

I would just replace them all.  It might be a while before you get the chance to do it again.

ATVGuy helped me find some hard to locate bolts. Very little parts needed now. 2 Zerks fittings for the top ball joints, a Banshee style chain guide, an upper chain roller, and putting this thing back together. I can't wait to smell that smoke!

Figured I would share the new tag. Relevant to the forum I suppose, as well as a pic of my mutts (no tails, get it?) in case anyone was thinking I had lost fingers haha.

No other pics to post unfortunately. Some more OEM parts have arrived and a nice quick cut off nozzle and filler hose for my VP fuel jug, but that's about it.

Thanks Gene. It only took them 6 years to calm down haha. They good dogs though, if I do say so myself.

Feel like I'm forgetting something... I keep re checking my parts list though and I should be good to go. I'm going to tinker some more tonight and I'll probably run across something small that I need.

Woot! Frame is finally here. All the factory stickers made my day haha. Looks very nice. Not a single crack and hardly a scratch. Bottom side looks excellent, even the smash pads under the front. +1 for Ceasarthethird. Great seller.

That's a nice looking frame... If your planning on leaving the factory paint on it clean it up good & wax it. I've done that to my frame with regular old turtle wax a few times during full strip downs since it was repainted blue in 1990 & so far its still holding up fairly well.

broken1, that sounds like a good idea. I hope to get it cleaned up today after work and continue assembly.

Got the frame cleaned up really good Wednesday. I need to take a toothbrush and water to the engine now. The only thing keeping me from assembling this thing now is the forward engine mounts' lower bolts. The 88-89 frame is flat there (short bolts). The 86 has the thick cast mount there and needs long bolts. Trying to figure out how to get them here by Saturday..

Finally finished moving in my new place and installing a new AC system in my girl's car so I am free to work on my own junk finally.

After getting the quad assembled Friday night I took it for a ride Saturday morning. With the suspension at a proper height (not lowered) this thing felt fast. I switched from the 12T to a 13T front sprocket (13/38) and it would stand up in 4th just snapping the throttle. Then I put it up because I have no footpegs haha

Pretty excited to have it together and clean. Now if Fall will hurry up I will be having a blast in the woods.

Nothing special to note here other than I am probably fully addicted to these quads now and don't understand how someone could ride anything else haha.

I'm doing small stuff at this point. Need a few small things and some new tires to mount on the Hiper wheels, but I've put two tank through it and feel good that the engine is solid.

Here are a few pics of me, my little brother on his new banshee, and a friend on his 400ex touring my new town (population:700). My neighbor buzzed my head in his J3 Cub and landed on his grass airstrip. Hit my first jump and was impressed with how light and agile the R feels.

Ill throw this pic up while I'm at it. I've never seen these until moving recently. They apparently live on rocky mountains here in Alabama. I see one about every night in the garage. They don't bother me and aren't inside my home, but one of my dogs tries to eat them so I'm sure she will learn a lesson eventually haha.

This one had babies all over it's back.

It's been a while, so I'll give an update.

My dog did in fact get lit up by a scorpion haha. My friend's dog then quickly bit the tail off the scorpion and ate it.. Good times.

The R is getting close! I've ran 3-4 tanks of fuel through it now. I've tracked down small OEM parts down here and there and my list is finally getting narrowed down. You guys have been invaluable helping me get this project going in such a short amount of time. I definitely appreciate it.

The list as of now is:
OEM coolant reservoir
Rear caliper mounting bracket (not the brake stay, the part that bolts to the brake stay.)
rear rotor (have a stock one, might buy another wave rotor. Toasted mine on a rock)
Push Lok hose and AN fittings for the radiator
Frame skid plate
Tabs welded to swingarm for skidplate (Thanks Hickwheeler)
Hood. I like the carbon hoods, but buying carbon makes you want more carbon lol.
Tires. Looking to order GBC XC Masters. One of two tires available in a 20" tall rear tire for a 10" dia. wheel.
Race dome for the ESR head.

After that, it will be small tweaks here and there and buying things I want rather than need. I'm excited to be on track for a good Fall of riding.

I'll update with some pictures once I have some worth posting up.

Swapped out the CGJ needle for a DGH. Second clip. Feels a bit rich in the mid section right before it hits. Has a stutter.

With the richer needle, should I go a bit leaner on the main?

What about the 48 pilot? That seems lean to me.

Air screw does not seem to change my idle much at all and I'm not sure why.

Plugs and a chopper on order.

Recap:
ESR330 (100LL, Klotz ST, 32:1)
39PWK (185mj, 48pj, DGH 2nd clip, 1.5 out on A/S)
TRX9b centermount and no airbox, Uni filter

85-95 degrees, 80-90% humidity

Looks like you are off to a great start! I know how you fell. My first was in shambles when I bought it. Every bearing was worn out and needed replacing; and the frame was cracked. Now the only part I have left from my original quad is the rear brake reservoir! LOL
Title: Re: 2Nubs's boondock build
Post by: 2Nubs on September 25, 2018, 09:16:52 AM
Thanks man. It's probably a good thing that I took it slow and went through the quad. I've learned a lot about the platform and found some things to fix that I might not have immediately noticed otherwise.

Rear brake, tires and a hood is all I really have let on the to do list. I'm getting anxious for fall.

OEM coolant reservoir, hose and rad shroud brackets on the way. They are original to the frame I purchased and look to be in very good condition. Thank you CeaserTheThird.

Helmet arrived from the Netherlands finally. Very impressed with the light weight and finish. I think it is a good value for the money.

Post by: 2Nubs on September 28, 2018, 03:03:44 PM
Thanks. It wasn't expensive as some of the big name helmets, but it is really light weight. The top Shoei and Fox helmets this year weigh in around 3.3 pounds and the carbon Striker weighed in at 2.2 pounds.

I'm currently cleaning behind my stator cover. A part of the gasket or possibly the grommet where the wires feed through gave way and let a lot of very fine dust and dirt back there. I've been told not to get anything back there wet and I've also been told to use Dawn and water to clean it then blow dry. What do you fellas say?
Title: Re: 2Nubs's boondock build

I pull the stator covers on my R's regularly because there notorious for letting water & other things inside. Especially after washing them its a good idea to pull the cover & check for moisture.

Still fine tuning the carb. I will most likely be looking for a new cylinder to have ported for low end or possibly find one to trade mine for. As much as I love the hit I need something more friendly for the tight woods. I'm going to see how I feel about it after a trip this Thanksgiving.

I've installed an OEM coolant tank, OEM rad shroud brackets and a TM Designworks frame pad. Fixing my rear brake and buying tires are the two big things I need to get done. The rest is pretty small.

Here's a pic I took while riding yesterday.

"Cleanup 9" so pretty much as cast. Can poor packing in the silencer cause poor performance? Mine has some loose rivets that might be letting some pressure through.

Temp and humidity dropped significantly around here last week and it seems that my R is running well. I'm going to do some plug chops when the temp is 60 degrees and see what it looks like.

I let a friend take it for a spin (hardcore 4 stroke guy) and he came back smiling. He's the 3rd friend I've talked into buying a quad so I have a decent little crew together.

I also tried my hand at 2 wheeled donuts lol

Looks good! Years ago when I was just learning maintenance basics I decided to try repacking the (now vintage) RPS silencer that was on my R when I bought it. The old packing didn't look all that bad but wow, what a difference in performance new packing made. Since then it's one of the first things I do to any two stroke I work on. It certainly can't hurt!

Action69 sent me a bracket for my rear caliper, thanks again. Always good to do business with you. Can't wait to have back brakes again haha.

I got some riding in yesterday by myself and had a good time. Every thing seems to be working well. I still have a small to do list, but unfortunately I'm looking for a tow rig right now and it isn't going well thus far. So the R is on the back burner for a bit now. Just riding it around my place on weekends and enjoying the weather. Once I have a truck I will be planning a ride. We still plan to try for Land Between the Lakes on Thanksgiving.

I'll upload some pics and vids of our awesome trip this weekend, but first I had an issue that randomly left us stranded for 30 minutes.

I had been doing some good 3-5th gear wheelies, set it down and was cruising 4th and it just shut off and coasted to a stop. I kick and kick and kick, nothing. Check that carb is getting fuel. I did not stick my finger in the spark plug cap, but I should have to verify spark. I hop on and the next kick it cranks right up but immediately bowwww, bowwww and dead. Does this off and on a few more times then it fires up, revs clean and I took off. We rode the rest of the day, got caught in a storm and rode the streets 12 miles back home in pouring rain with zero issues.

Just curious if this is something you OG's have seen before and can maybe help point me in the right direction. I immediately thought electrical problem, but when it would fire up and immediately go dead it sounded like it was fuel starved.

I didn't even think about that. I've got plenty of slack.

I wonder if water got in some where and gave intermittent problems. Possibly between two connections.

Still chipping away at my to-do list. Picked up some polished controls (throttle and front brake) and a Fourwerx hood. Close to ordering a set of GBC tires as soon as I can get a smaller rear wheel setup and then I can bolt the Hipers up. Feel like they do a lot in the looks department. At least when compared to my beat up aluminum wheels.

I'll post some pics and vids of the last trip we took to my parents hood. Very backwoods and I have been riding the roads through the valley since I was 9-10 years old. Always so much fun. Caves, natural springs, and several other cool places to stop. We got caught in a storm a good stroke from the house so we just kept riding. My little brother is on the Banshee getting sideways. Good times.

Well, it seems the 400ex throttle was going to be a pain to get working properly with my PWK, soooo more dollars. Quad might as well be a stripper the way I keep throwing money at it.

Picked up another polished throttle. This time the correct OEM unit from a 250R. Same guy that I bought the polished brake setup control setup from. Not sure what he used, but it is top notch polishing. Hopefully this one last a long time. They are proud of these old parts.

The FourWerx hood has got to be the best mod I've done in the looks department. Excellent quality! Easy to see why so many people run these on their R. Hard to stop staring at it lol.

Over the holiday all the kids of my girl friend's family got their own quads (ages 4-9). It was awesome to see the excitement of a kid when they hopped on and fired up the new toy. We unloaded my quad and me and my girl friend doubled up and putted around letting them all beat me in a race. Good times!

I got a little seat time this week on the R. I'm getting back to chipping away at the small to do list I have. Yesterday the clutch cable snapped a few miles from home so I have a new one on the way as well as some rear brake pads. Next will be a poly frame skid and some tires for my Hyper wheels.

I also need to buy a factory style chain slider for the swingarm. I threw the chain off a while back due to a warped sprocket and it got in between the countershaft and swingarm and chewed the TM Designworks chain block up pretty bad. I'm really not a fan of needing to drop the swingarm to replace it. Will add a poly case saver at that time.

I added my bling to the handlebars finally. Very pleased with the fresh factory throttle. No more slack.

Bought a new flat hood for the R. Loved the scooped style, but wanted to try the flat one out as I like the original lines of the front end.

Supposedly this is the first one built by Fourwerx. It was sent to a guy for test fitment and was never used after that. I need to pick up a matching tank cover.

I'll be looking into how I want to repair my oil drain here soon. Looks to be using a NPT plug of roughly 15-16mm currently. Little things like this drive me absolutely nuts. Even when they work without issue, I just don't understand why people do things this way. I will hopefully have enough meat to work with and be able to get a proper bolt in there.

I run a OEM clutch cable, I have an aftermarket zip tied to the OEM one Just in case it breaks.

I got some good riding in on Easter Sunday. Hit around 35-40 miles of asphalt to all my usual spots. The R ran excellent which I was happy about. Other than running into other riders I was alone on this trip and cell phone coverage is bad in the valley.

Couple pics of the new hood. It grew on me.

Thanks Gene.

Do you guys use factory clutch springs? Mine is starting to slip. I've seen a write up around here using different plate thicknesses and such. I will refer to that thread and see if I can find the info I need.

Factory springs with washers, and a 400ex steel plate for me

Pics look awesome. That looks like prime riding territory

Awesome! I was pretty sure you guys were using OEM/OE upgrades for the clutch.

Tbone, this was just a mild cruise this go around. In my older age I am starting to take more care at things when I am alone. The hospital is a long ways away and sometimes the cell service is as well.

The next trip I will try to hit the good stuff and have my GoPro hooked to the R.

Thanks for all the help guys. I will get my clutch pulled out if I can stay off the thing for a day. Nice weather and a full jug of fuel is hard to ignore!
