What’s everybody running for ignition setups ? Or opinions.
-
OEM ATC/TRX 250R or CR250R. Stay away from the aftermarket ATC/TRX CDI's. Unfortunately all the OEM components are discontinued (ATC/TRX and 2001 CR). Prices for CR ignitions seem to be going up. Buy if and when you see them.
I'm running a 1999 CR250R ignition in a 275PV. 2001 CR ignition is on the shelf waiting for a big bore.

I need to see what all the fuss is about a CR ignition. I run an 01 CR ignition on my R and have no complaints. Fires on first kick, snappy response and runs great.
But, I have never ridden an R with a stock ignition. So I can't personally speak on the difference.
-
I have ran both on the same motors. The stock 250r stuff has a little bit more low end the CR. I switched back to the CR on my BB. Because with race gas if you kicked it half ass. It would kick back. Now no kick backs even when I tried to start it with flip flops on (mistake)

Had a pvl but it took a shit over the weekend . so I put a stock one back in to keep my son riding over the weekend . It was definitely a little lazy with the stock one in it .
-
What went on the pvl. I have some pvl parts ignitions
-
Haven’t checked it out yet just threw it in the tool box . I’ll let ya know if I get it figured out seemed to work good on that combo so would be interested in parts or just get another one new worst case .
-
Arlan advocates for the PVL ignition so I'd be interested to check it out. I run an OEM ignition at the moment
-
Pete also suggests a pvl as an option. I will most likely use one on my next build as cr ignitions are hard to find and are being sold for ridiculous prices. My son had a pvl in his mini quad and it worked great. Pete explained to me that if set up properly they work flawlessly.

buy this now! https://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-00-01-CR250R-CR250-Electrical-System-CDI-Stator-Flywheel-Wiring-Ignition/273411653077?fits=Year%3A2001%7CModel%3ACR250R&hash=item3fa89abdd5:g:eOkAAOSwpspbdg6b
you might not find another in the near future.

Holy crap. I didn't realize it was an $800 upgrade.

That’s a ridiculous price there usually around $450-$500 on average

worth every cent. luckily I got mine about 10 years ago from ESR for $380

discontinued parts and big dog turd pumping up the price inflated the cost significantly.

Well, glad I bought a R that had it already. I've still got my factory one as well for a back up.

CR is all I've ran, heard about some set-up struggles with PVL but no experience myself. $750 isn't exactly a deal for a CR250 ignition as the going-rate seems lower than that eBay price. w
-
I paid $545 I think for my cr ign last year. I can't believe how much they've gone up. It dosent help the zilla guys also run the cr ign to. That $700 eBay cr ignition that was posted looks almost brand new.

Member Dave (rsss396). I member. He did a lot of testing on the different CR ignitions. Miss that guy. He posted many graphs on timing curves. I member, he said that one the years CR125 was close to the 01 CR250. He even had the capability of mapping. A great resource lost.

Hate to hear he's gone. Sign-on name looks like he was a fellow hot rodder, too.

dave is surely missed. he is a wealth of knowledge. we all learned a lot from him.

What’s on the super for an ignition?

Personally I can't tell a lot of difference between the stock stuff and the cr ignition. Most people feel the cr as snappier it should be with the reduced flywheel weight. The trx cod actually has more advance early on and will help low end response. Problem with trx stuff is it's old and most times people have problems with the stator producing low current so the spark is weak. I have the stock ignition on my little 310 with a slightly lightened flywheel and it works great. You just need to close the spark plug gap a bit to compensate for a little less spark energy

I feel there is no comparison.
more power everywhere, easier to start, better throttle response, more reliable components and felt like i had just did some port work on a stock cylinder. once port work/head work was completed, the overall performance was incredible.

Did something happen to him or is he just out of the hobby?

not that i am aware of. he just stopped coming to the site, so i assume he either is out of the sport or doesn't do the forum thing anymore.

Here was an option, 5 years ago. Dave did a lot of researching on the CR500 ignition from Service Honda. Unfortunately, they are gone too.
