Need input on a mx/trail long travel/elka setup . I’m looking to buy lonestar 3+1 longtravel arms with long travel elkas for the front . Now for the real question what size shock can I run on the back with a stock swinger/linkage ?
I’d like to keep the stock length swingarm it’s an 86 but I’m really wanting to do a long travel build and i dont see how a long travel shock will bolt up to the stock 86 frame /linkage . I’m wondering if the bike will sit off kilter (higher) in the front and lower in the back if not able to run a lt in the rear. When I built my banshee elka sold a $500 lt link and it bolted right in with no mods

No one makes a different link (long shock link) for the oem setup. Where are you purchasing the Ella’s from?
The shock guys are going to need some measurements to set them up correctly

Probly atv galaxy. But what I’m trying to figure out if I do a lt front end in my bike , if I run a standard length shock on the rear will that be ok ? Meaning will it sit off kilter being the fact the front shocks are longer? Worse case I’ll just do standard travel all around I don’t want to create a headache

Yes you'll be fine. The overall e2e length of the shocks only increases about an inch or less when going from stock to say +2 standard travel a-arms. Going from stock to say +3 LT, you increase a couple of inches in e2e length but mainly because the lower shock mount has moved down (as well as out). Just give the shock builder info on your setup, specifically where you want ride heights.
On the rear, I'm not much help though I've heard of people squeezing more travel out of OEM shocks - I'd say @Eschonda at https://www.schmidtyracing.com/ (https://www.schmidtyracing.com/) would be the guy to talk to on that one.

You can do a Longer travel mod to the earlier shocks. It will raise the ride height.
If you want the additional travel without raising ride height you need an early and a late model shock and we combine them. For that you would need to run a modified airbox, as the compressed length gets a little shorter .

Would a durablue adjustable link be helpful on a set up he’s looking to do?
-
Could go no link for a little extra.
Lt or st you still measure for shocks the same way...
Set the quad on a 1.5" block and measure compressed
Then set it on a 13~13.5" block an measure extended.

I’ve been reasearching and found a company called koq racing they make a long travel no link rear swinger that bolts right up to the stock frame . They also make lt a arms 2+1 anyone ever hear of them or use the products on their bike? Also I read it’s good to go with a -1 or -2 swingarm instead of factory 86 length
-
They have the lt swingarm on eBay and lt a arms . I’m surprised no other major name brand company makes a rear lt swingarm that bolts up to a stock frame

I had Steve Buchinsky (ISF Racing) build me a tubular gullwing no link and I have a dc2 lsr both 88/89 length. Idk if I'd go any shorter. The difference in traction was really noticeable, unless it was a tt build.
Burns runs/ran a koq. Cracked the 1st one, haven't heard anyyhing on the 2nd one. I believe Michael88r? Had one an stuff wasn't lining up. Might do a search on the site here for it...

Ok thanks for the info. I want to buy lsr lt arms and lt Elkas for the front for sure. I buy most of my parts from atv galaxy and I spoke to mike that works there and he says that I can do the front like I plan on but the back will have a standard travel shock on it which would be fine he says. He said he owns 5 trx’s And has built dozens of them. As far as a swingarm if I can have a -1 no link (long travel) made that will bolt up to my 86 stock frame so I can buy a LT elka rear shock I’m all for it . I’m trying to not rush the build and money with this bike isn’t really an object I want to do it right the first time and not regret what I buy.

Stock set up in the rear LT front will be fine. Unless your pro your not going to notice the difference. Being once in your shoes your just throwing money at it.
If you go no link in the rear not only will you need a swinger your also going to need modify your frame. The upper shock mount can not take the hits from the no link shock in stock form. Google it and you'll find some nasty pics of guys that didn't reenforce the area.
In all seriousness I would suggest +3 standard arms and the best standard length shocks with all the bells and whistles you can get.

1.Our quads are a bit dated and it's a niche market.
2. With the availability of good shocks today there in not a high demand for no link.
Oh -1 86 swingarm is the same length as 88-89. I personally like the length. It made a huge difference at the track.

Hawaiiysr , thanks for the info. I’ll scrap the nolink idea then . The difference in price for an LT front vs standard isn’t that much of difference . I like the idea of having more travel especially if coming down off flat bottom jumps in trails or fields. The -1 swinger I’m gonna go with. If I go LT up front and standard in the rear, will the rear sit lower? I’m don’t want to create a headache with this build and have to mod a bunch of other areas just because the front end was donr in an LT setup instead of standard 2-3+1 lsr arms . So tell me guys what’s the verdict guys LT front 3+1 or standard travel 2+1 ? Lol

I believe forum member and racer Burns363R has used that KOQ swingarm set up. Maybe he will see this thread or you could send him a pm.

Like I mentioned above I've been in your shoes and had the same thought process you are going through. My R has +3 laeger LT up front with pep zps shocks. Out back I'm currently running a stock heart transplant. With a laeger -1 arm (88-89 length) And it all feels good to me.
Before this I was running +3 arms and triple rate tcs standard travel shocks. I couldn't really tell the difference other then the zps sat lower. Out back was the same set up.
If your going to be hitting trails I would suggest going with +2

If you've got the money for the LT setup in the front, then I don't see a reason why you shouldn't go that route.
No linkage available for the rear that will turn it into LT. You can go no-link, but as stated earlier you'll need to strengthen the upper shock mount considerably.
What type of riding are you doing?
