Actually 85 to 89 right side cases are the same The whole engine is the same. The only difference is 85 & 86 are short rod engines. 87 to 89 are long  rod engines. There are slight differences in different year heads. as a matter of fact i have an extra cylinder and head

Mostly true. If you look at the very front of the engine where the mounting bolt goes through the cases there is a difference in appearance.  If you mix and match cases you will notice the difference.  The earlier cases had more of the bolt exposed than the later cases. Thanks Loren

I think you have that swapped around Loren. Early cases had less of an opening. 88-9 had the bigger opening

Keep in mind the color difference also. The right side case I’m looking for is for a buddy that is doing a complete NOS build.

@meathead, the cylinder and head that you mentioned...new?

Joe

I was really confused how my trike cases have the V style opening lol. I had also read elsewhere that the V style was late model. Thanks for clarifying Gene.

There's more subtle differences between all the years than most realize.

CROAT 1 No its not new, but i'm pretty sure it has a stock bore. You probably want a matched set of cases.
