Title: Polished or black?
Post by: Michael88R on February 28, 2019, 10:24:44 PM
What do you all think?  Polished/dull or black wheels?  Kinda tired of polishing.  The light wasn’t too good on the black pics.  Hipers are going on my 450R.  Thinking about painting my wheels.

Black! Polishing is a waste of time

I like the black

I run polished wheels on my sand tires as they don't get very dirty, and black powder coated 450r wheels on my dirt/trail tires, as they get really coated in muck, and clean up easier.

Black is looking pretty slick. Good looking R you have.

I like the brushed aluminum look better. Easier maintenance, cleaning, etc. Seems to me that black would dull over time after the sand eats it away, no? Sand in Michigan is a bit different than out in the PNW though.

Yes. The sand gets in the wheel and swirls around.  I’ll probably have to re-paint almost as much as re-polishing.  The rear I’m going to be using is a 9” so it’ll last a bit longer than a 10”.  I painted some 10” with sand skates and the outer edge lasted one ride.  That’s one reason I got the hipers.  No matter what, they stay black.  Black Pc will eventually get jacked up too and then it’s harder to fix.

I have some 10" Hypers with a red beadlock ring if you want to swap for your 9's haha. 10" dirt tires are nearly non existent.

I think the Hypers are the best looking rim out there unless you drop the coin for OMF's.

I have been running black wheels in the sand for 6 years.  The pc has dulled some, but a little armor all brings them back to shiny.

Sorry nubs.  My hipers are 10x9.  The wheels I’m gonna paint are 9x9.

6 years on the PC. That’s good.  I don’t ride a lot so probably will do alright for me.  Wonder if I could put some kinda clear coat over the black paint to help out.  I didn’t really want to PC them.

Try hammerite paint. It's hard as hell.  Also a good automotive paint would last longer than rattle can paint

Hammerite.  I’ll check it out. Thanks.

Black looks nice and a bit utilitarian.  Polish on a dune bike always looks great.

Years ago, I tried to polish or chrome every part on my 450. I stood back and looked at it one day, I have a Quad Harley.

It's preference and color-scheme.  I tried black this last year and am switching back to polish.. while I loved the no-maintenance, just didn't fit the color scheme as well as polish.

Agreed.  I think my 450R 100% looks better with black.  It has black a-arms too.

Sweet! I love that look now.

I have the 04 with red fenders. Been wanting to pull the monitary trigger on new black.
