Title: Intake Clamps
Post by: havinnoj on March 08, 2020, 04:19:02 PM
Whats everyone running for intake to carb clamps?  I have a couple boyseen ones that have been good and another worm gear style.  I’ve seen these over the years but never personally tried.  What are people running?

I like the thinner European clamps, as they fit better. My personal favorites are Mercedes clamps, with BMW second, because they have more limited sizes. The narrower clamps hold the hose better then the wider US clamps but are still a worm drive, with a 6, 7, or 8mm  hex head for tightening. Some were cut for a straight blade or Phillips for tightening. Made of a solid material so they don't tear the hose when tightened. Whenever I go to the Pull A Part yards I always look to the European cars for clamps. The Phillips screws always get stuck and the clamps get twisted in the Asian brands of motorcycles. The European clamps are usually stainless also. Sorry, but 40 years of European vehicle work and I have my preferences.

Good feedback. Have a link to particular clamp you’re referencing?

Awesome thanks Joe.

That's them, but I like MB star or the BMW emblem on them :). The're pennies at  the yards, so I try to keep several around. The rolled edge is cool too. Most auto parts places don't carry them, or even know they exist, so online, or the Dealers are about the only other source.

I have one of two of these - they turn so smooth.  I'm out of town for a couple of days - anybody know sizes needed off-hand so I can order online?

T-bolt clamp if you want something heavy duty. I like the fuel injection camp style that is used from the factory as well. Anything to avoid a worm gear.

I’ve used t bolts a lot for boosted applications, but they work well otherwise to not pinch the rubber boot and they won’t strip out.

I have some of the tko clamps for water inlets. Someday I might install them. I will say the guys over there are good peeps. They will build custom sizes for you. It was about a year ago when i talked to them. At that time they were not charging extra for custom sizes.

Yep talked to Tim for about 30 minutes the other week, they're good people!  I know your clamps aren't installed but what are your thoughts on quality?  And which ones did you go with?

1st T-bolt clamp I used was to hold a stainless tail pipe tip on a hot rod. I have almost a dozen of them on my boosted DD. they hold up well with 25+ lbs of boost  ;D . The big motors (semi/railroad/marine) use a version of T-Bolt clamp with a thermal element in them so under heat they will  allow movement/stretch with thermal expansion, but don't price them unless you are sitting down. :)

The spring loaded ones hold 50+psi no problem  8)

I went with custom size, latch style. Will have to mill a little material away to clear the head. All the other clamps should clear

Look nice!  Anybody know the actual size for carb/intake boot before I go out and put calipers on it later this afternoon?
