Title: LRD Attitude build
Post by: Action69 on July 09, 2020, 08:25:41 PM

So this past weekend I came across an LRD attitude frame on FB marketplace, I reached out to the guy Friday night we spoke Saturday morning and he was leaving the next evening on a road trip from Massachusetts to South Carolina for a week.He had said he had a lot of bs calls and no one serious so I said look I’m for real let’s do this I’ll give you a $300 deposit so you know I’m serious and not loading a frame into a Toyota camera leaving for a road trip.lol.We scheduled to meet midway and I picked it up ..I was up in the air if I was going to do another  build because I had some nice spare parts laying around that I was going to sell or do a build,I chose the latter.so far my plans for it are possibly leaving the frame in the silver natural state it’s in,I just ordered Kawasaki green full fender maiers,I have nos merril extreme LT a arms, axis front shocks,cr ignition, spare set of Oem white plastics.i just bought but haven’t received a one of two prototype works performance no link swing arm from the 90’s.To keep it all in the family I picked up a works performance rear shock as well.A fellow member has lrd foot pegs that I will be purchasing shortly..I’m thinking of going with aftermarket hubs both front and rear.I also have some cool NPM parts such as radiator mounts, black anodized brake resivour and throttle cover.I have a stock seat that I will be having fourwerx recover for me,im thinking of adding LRD on sides of seat with attitude across the back and possibly using green&silver accents with a black cover.im thinking of running a cfm airbox if it will fit the frame.im not sure on what colors to do the a arms and swinger..I’m also thinking of getting an LRD pipe and silencer if I can find a nice clean one and if they’re good performers..I’m open to any input or suggestions as well as open to buy parts..thanks for reading..I’ll post some pictures soon..

Nice, can’t wait to see this build come together.  I for sure would leave the frame as is...natural color.

Good to know. New motors are always fun.  I don't have a bottom end but am thinking of letting go of my Pro-X 310 PV that Pete did for me, only has a few hours on new bore & piston. Not sure that's up your alley but if so shoot me a PM.

How many pounds are saved vs a stock frame?
Title: Re: LRD Attitude build

I don't think weight saving is considered on an aftermarket frame, Tubing diameter and wall thickness, are optimized for strength first, with any weight being of a secondary concern.

Why build it out of aluminum if not trying to save weight?  Just wondering.
Title: Re: LRD Attitude build
Post by: The norm on August 05, 2020, 04:19:26 PM
I would like to think that aluminum is used for weight savings and rigidity. Aluminum doesn't flex like steel or chromoly. With aluminum you can use a larger diameter tube (which adds rigidity) with a relatively thin wall thickness. So you should be able to shed some weight and produce a more rigid frame.  I could be way off the mark, but it makes sense to me.
Those LRD aluminum frames look beefy! I love the look for sure.

The LRD frame is 32 pounds.  A stock frame is 38 pounds.

I didn’t weigh it but just by picking it up it felt quite lighter than a stock frame..
Title: Re: LRD Attitude build
Post by: desertR on August 06, 2020, 01:59:17 AM
6 lbs isn't much, pull the rear caliper brake mechanical and cable and assoc parts and that's 2lbs. Stock pipe and muffler is an easy 5/6 pounds.
I think it's more about better rear shock workings and perhaps better geometry. I still believe that weight is secondary to strength. If all it was is weight we would have seen a lot more aluminum, titanium, and/or beryllium frames, regardless of toxicity. Aluminum is more rigid then steel but if Honda really wanted to, they could have made their own "race" frame, in limited production runs. Honda builds a lot of aluminum frames for other units, they have the technology and processes. It's hard to say how Honda justifies production changes or numbers, if they had continued production past '89' things might have been different, but we'll never know. I don't think Honda predicted the continued popularity of the 250r some 30 years later.

I personally didn’t buy it for weight savings,I just think it’s a bad ass frame..

I remember those silencers! My buddy had one for a 4stroke on his LRD built 700cc 2001 raptor. It was loud!
Looks good Steven. I can't wait to see the finished bike!
Title: Re: LRD Attitude build
Post by: broken1 on August 09, 2020, 01:06:18 PM
I have that same exhaust but not quite as nice. The silencer was red but the agonizing was faded & ugly so I glass beaded it. After blasting you can still see the etched script on the silencer.

Everything is looking awesome. Post up a picture of that frame!!

Are you going with an all-LRD themed build? That would be sick.

I have seen an lrd shock but it looked like basically a stock shock revalved with their sticker on it.Ive already got the pegs(thanks Joe Croat1),I’ve got a pro armor grab bar and just got that front bumper so looks like I’ve got most of it covered..I need to take measurements and start getting hardware to mount this stuff up.From roughly mocking up the plastic they look like they will require some tinkering to fit right..pretty much what I’ve  read in others build threads.

Where...for the love of God, tell me where did you get that bumper? I have been looking for a good Timmy Boy bumper for a long time. Contact details please.

I bought a beat up one, and it's on my tomorrow list to replicate it. But this will save me a lot of headache and disappointment...because I don't have good fab skills.

Lrd did revalves and rebuilds on stock and aftermarket shocks. I don't think Arlan does that anymore

I stopped by my garage and unboxed the Atc motor, damn this thing is clean almost all of the original motor paint is perfect. There is a small spot the size of a dime that the paint was chipped and another wear mark from the kicker on the outer clutch cover..Other than that it looks perfect.
