Title: Discontinued NGK spark plug
Post by: The norm on January 16, 2021, 08:38:16 PM
I'm sure everyone knows that NGK has discontinued the B8ES spark plug. What has everyone switched to? I did a search on here and didn't see a previous thread. Let me know what plug you guys are running with a stock ignition and with a CR ignition.
Thanks Loren

1.  Go to every auto parts store in your town and clean them out of the B8ES plug.

2. Purchase Honda part number (98079-58840).  That part number is a NGK B8ES plug.  Should be $3.00 at your local Honda shop.

I will be purchasing a lifetime supply before they all disappear. Have a good start with about 10 on hand right now.

I was able to locate a readily available alternative to the B8es plug. I bought a handful of B8eg which is supposed to be a better plug according to several MX forums. The 1997-2001 CR250 manual calls for a NGKBR8EG plug among a few other options. I am not sure if the CR ignition performs better with a resistor plug or non resistor plug.

Thats a viable option since the BR8EG is what is used in the CR250.

Supposedly the B8EG plug is less susceptible to fouling. I have probably fouled 3 plugs in 20+ years so I'm not too concerned about it.

Fouled plugs only happen from improper jetting or from an engine thats getting worn & tired but even a tired engine can be re-jetted to prevent plug fouling. If you've only fouled 3 plugs in 20+ years that means your good at tuning & maintenance.

I work in the automotive industry and my local Napa rep gave me some E3 plugs to try and I've actually had good luck with them. (though I still keep an NGK on me, just in case).

E3.31 is the part number that interchanges to the B8ES

They quit making the b8es?  I was looking through the manual on my last plug order and re-discovered Honda recommended a 9 heat range, so I’m trying those for now

Been running BR8ES's in both bikes with CR ignitions.  Have tried BR8IX's and those seem good too but didn't seen a 3x improvement to warrant the price point. We did run those exclusively in Super on alcohol though.

I bought two boxes of the B8EG and will run them in all 3 R's. The boys have oem ignitions and those do not need resistor plugs
