#1 is Denton. Thinkin #2 is Hitt. Sparks always did Hitt’s engines. I’d like to know why they had so much camber back in the day and now they don’t. Tire selection?

Sparks and Hitt were one good combination. As far as running the camber like the old school racers did...tires available at the time and the blue grooved hard packed tracks (at times) allowed for very fast cornering.

Cool pic! That 88 in the background is especially badass! Looks like it's just some random guy without sponsors that showed up with an R to go out there & throw down with the big boys on what looks like a stock appearing stickerless 88, complete with the optional fitted handguards. 8)

I went to 4 of the GNCC races that year and watched that machine fly with Bill riding it. Heres a couple of pics that I took. The last one is him taking the bridge at Steele Creek NC, way out in front as always. My scanner kind of cropped these out a little, I'll try to dig up some more also.

Its impressive that years after Honda stop making the trx 250r it was still dominating quad racing.
-
Yup, 2003 was the last year for their dominance in GNCC XC, only because of the rule change for 2004 :'(

This thread brings back memories. My cousin David and I would save or pennies and pool them together to buy a atv trader just to drool over the atc250r' and trx250r's. Every now and then we would scrape up enough money for the latest dirt wheels. Now we are both in our 40's and we throw good money after bad at 250r' lol. I just can't seem to get rid of the love of the 250r.
Joe I thank you for posting this kind of nostalgia.

Another Lager and another Hawk bike…this time
the real one. Tony Keller wrenched Laeger
narrow, cr500 link, Protrax, LRD powered. This is
the only one I'm not putting together myself,
Keller Jr (aka Craig Greenwood) is doing the
complete restoration. I've watched a lot of
them, and, in my opinion, Barry is the greatest gncc
racer. Once he started winning GNCC titles, no
one was able to wrestle one from him. He retired
from the ATV side in his prime and went on to win
another GNCC championship on a bike. Barry is
still fast, still down to earth and still very active at
the races.

The late Charlie Shepherd
Chargin Charlie Shepherd One of the fastest riders
in the world in the late 80's through early 90's.
Chargin Charlie won the Mickey Thompson
Championship in 1990 using a CT Racing powered
TX 250R to the most dominant season in Mickey
Thomson history (all classes) with 6 wins 2
seconds and 2 thirds in the 10 race series. Donny
Banks was second 146 points behind!
Chargin Charlie through his years of competing
raced for Curtis Sparks, Duncan Racing and CT
Racing, making friends wherever he went.
Sad news Chargin Charlie Died just a couple of
days before Christmas. It was a complete surprise
to the Family, Charlie still quite young in his mid
40's. the death was caused by a brain aneurysm.

Too cool not to share. I wonder where these frames ended up. LRD frames.
Does anyone have experience with how durable they were compared to a steel frame?
Jason, I’ve seen 2 of them broken after hard crashes. The breaks were on the frame behind the lower A-arm mounts.
I’ve also seen comments from former aluminum frame owners like….run them hard and they will break. Big motors will cause issues.

That's about what my recollection says. Interesting that it broke behind the lower arm mounts. Probalby the purpose for the OE gussets there.
I looked at lsr's TI frame for a short while. Ti still sounds interesting. I want to build a small scale model to simulate the load paths.

“Bill Ballance is the last racer to overall a GNCC on a 250R based machine. The Kentucky GNCC legend won the final race of 2003 at the Ironman round”
His quote on the podium, "This is the best way to retire this two stroke machine. Now, it is time to make this thing obsolete and bring out the production machines. I am looking for the factories to come in and make this sport just what we want." Bill had no idea how right he would be. The factories and production bikes DID come, the sport DID change, and almost just as fast it all ended”.

The 90’s were a great time for off-road riding events. We had tons of great events in Washington and Oregon that are mostly long gone. All the timber companies locked up their land about 10 years ago so that cut off thousands of miles of awesome trail riding and the state land has so many riders on it it has become dangerous. The SxS’s on quad trails is a huge problem. If only we could go back to the good old days…..

a pair of Barry Hawk's...Jr and Sr... 30 years ago. Jr was on his Kellner prepped Laeger in the pro class and Sr on his distinctive yellow 250R in the senior class. For the younger Hawk, 1995 would turn out to be the third of his seven consecutive # 1 plates and put him well on his way to a Hall of Fame career.

1992 High Point GNCC and legends Jason "Jake" Brown, Bob "Ironman" Sloan and "Big Dave" Coombs. Bob would win that day, with Brown taking second on the course Dave laid out. The irony with this pic is that all three would pass away too young within the next few years. The teenage phenom Brown perished in a Corvette crash just a few months later. Sloan would tragically pass on the last lap of the Starvation Point GNCC in 1994.
Big Dave himself would succumb to complications from leukemia in 1998. Godspeed to all three legends of the sport.

Pennsylvania's Chuck DeLullo in a promo ad back in '91 for EK Chain at the Blackwater. Unfortunately, Chuck's attempt to win the '91 Blackwater ended in the infamous moon rocks. DeLullo's GNCC career on the ATV was relatively short and yet he still won three overall championships and twenty one overalls.
