I find this cool so I figured I would share....factory assembly/inspection marking. On a number of places the engines were paint marked. Here’s a few for now. I’ll post the other external locations soon and then I’ll post what I found internally.
Clutch cable mount, actuator arm and left rear cylinder nut. The cylinder nut is hard to see but the 3 locations I mentioned have a blue paint mark.

Exhaust manifold top mount bolt marked in blue.

Clutch cover bolt and coolant fitting marked in blue.

More external marking. Carburetor cap, choke and vent line.

The pictures I have already shown are from a 1985 ATC250R. The following pic is from a 1986 ATC250R. Blue mark on the case vent T. I did not see this mark on the 85 atc engines.

Joe have you ever seen "A" or "B" markings on cylinders?
I thought the talk about it was BS until I seen it for myself.

Josh, yes I have seen the marking you mentioned. My 87 cylinder is marked ”B”. The 85/86 atc250r cylinders do not have the “A” or “B” marking.

I have some 86 trx cylinders with the A stamp & I think 1 with the B stamp. If I remember right it had something to do with piston/cylinder clearance or something to do with the bore.

That’s about it for external markings on 85/86 ATC250R engines unless I missed some that were worn off from age. The pictures in this thread were of take out engines (never fired). Unfortunately I do not have any clean 86-89 TRX250R engines to look for factory markings. If someone does please post up.
Maybe one day this info will help a guy that’s doing a 100% true restoration.
I will make another thread about internal engine paint marks.

Oops found one more external mark. Blue mark on the shifter pinch bolt.

Numerical “code” in white on the bottom of the cases.

Not factory but notice the label on the stator cover. Dealer sticker after taking the engine out.
