Title: Reproduction intake boots
Post by: croat1 on May 25, 2022, 08:31:14 PM
Here’s some info from 2015 inquiring about intake boots from a company called Hotfoot moto

Not sure what company made the ones listed lately on Ebay but here is a NOS oem on the left and the reproduction on the right

Oem on the left. Reproduction on the right. Both have the same internal diameter.

Initial impression out of the box is that’s a nice part.  Extremely pliable even more than a NOS oem boot.  One concern immediately was the internal diameter on the carburetor side. It was smaller visually looking at it. Putting a scale on it verifies my old eyes lol.

Thanks for sharing, Joe!

You mentioned that it felt more pliable than the NOS OEM boot; even though the carb side diameter is a little smaller, do you think it would stretch over a larger carb (38/39 PWK, for example) more easily than an OEM boot?

Hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like the oem has a significant radiused edge. Curious to see what the difference between the 2 would be using some inside calipers...or just slap it on a carb

Jason and Wes…….I’ll fit it to some larger carbs and report what I find

What I’d really like to do is turn some round stock on a lathe to get the true accurate dimensions (for a nice slip fit) but unfortunately I no longer have access to a lathe. So fitting it to some carbs will have to do.  I have some Keihns (up to 40.5).  I also have a Mikuni.

John, this one was purchased from eBay (Race quads for kids).  I still have to post some pics of areas of concern.

I tried the NOS oem vs. reproduction on a 86 atc250r oem carb.  The oem is night and day difference compared to the reproduction.  It’s a chore to fit the reproduction on an oem Keihn PJ carburetor.  Difficult to say the least.

Thanks for checking, Joe. If it struggles to fit the OEM carb, surely it’s only worse on a larger one.

I have an OEM boot that I’m trying to get to fit on a 39 PWK - no luck yet. I’ve done it before with the boiling method, but I just can’t get this one to stretch enough. I’ll keep trying. I was hoping the reproduction boot was going to be a potential option if I can’t get this one to go.

Wes, have you tried using oil of Wintergreen and alcohol?

I've used a heat gun on 3 old stiff oem boots & it worked great

I boiled the boots in water to soften them and also used a heat gun. I personally like the heat gun best. The boots are hard to hold on to if it is scalding hot all over. The heat gun heats right where you need it.

Looks like they now offer a reproduction boot to fit larger carburetors….

Has anyone put one of these through a few rides? It would be nice to get a ride report on how they hold up.

I worked with the hotfootmoto guy years ago to make the first 86. I never ran the reproduction I got from it, but I remember the material being really stiff. It wasn't a bad attempt, but I never ran it.

I did have an open filter bracket made that is longer on the carb side so that a CR reed boot can be used, which I think is preferable for smaller bore engines instead of the larger volume trx boot. I still have a few. I'd be glad to send a couple.

@All250R

Jason, by chance do you still have any brackets available?

Thanks

Hey Joe, I have a few left and can send you one. Just the cost of a medium flat rate box is fine.
