Title: Trouble disassembling/separating PT 89 Race pipe
Post by: All250R on May 31, 2022, 11:26:19 AM
Guys,
I think years ago I put some RTV in the joint that separates the header from the main body. I'm trying to get the pipe off the bike, but I cannot get the two sides separated. Any tips? I'm short of taking a sawzall to it...

Hi Jason, try some heat and a strap wrench.

Kroil penetrating oil/solvent works great on RTV. It also helps with rusted/crusted metal on metal connections. Spray some on and let it sit for a while then go after it with the strap wrench like Joe suggested. Heat will also work to break down the RTV.

Whatever you do, please don't take a sawzall to it. You'll eventually get it off but you should also be proud of the fact you had that sucker sealed up good. Mine usually leak

The strap wrench did it before I had to apply any heat. Thanks Joe. I applied some pb blaster, though not sure how far I got it into the joint.

Let me know if anyone is interested in trading for a not-rusted trx9 pipe.
