MUCH better! Results were still the same. Another 3rd place but I was within 10 seconds a lap of the two other riders and a few laps matched and a few laps had faster times. Overall I was very impressed with the changes. I missed 2nd gear on the holeshot but stole 2nd away after about the first 1/4 lap and held it till 2 laps left when I had to pull off to refuel. The change from pump gas dome to race gas dome in the ESR310PV made a pretty big difference out of the corners. Had a lot more grunt and seemed to help it get into the powerband that much faster. 175psi to 190psi. You'd think wouldn't be that big of a deal but it really was. I didn't have time to do any machining to get it to 205psi where I'd like to see it so I just ran it as it came from Eddie. It responded well to the 50/50 blend of 110 Sunoco and 93 octane. Can't forget the Klotz Super Techniplate. Been cleaning the powervalve after every race and it's doing really super not gunking up on it. Still sliding perfectly.
Also ditched the PEP fronts for a set of TRX450R's. That was a very smart move. My a-arms are a bit longer than stock so the new shocks line up well. Bit stiffer so I tightened up the rear as well and really loved the ride and feedback on the race course yesterday. Probably putting the PEP's up for sale here shortly. lol
So going from being a minute to minute and a half down on 1st and 2nd to running very similar lap times...I think the upgrades were good ones. Now to get the psi up to 205 and really smile. :)
Also side note. Retiring the Honda CR-V after this race. The wife and I both got newer vehicles so I'm kind of sad to see her go. She hauled me and the R around many, many times and still pulled over 24mpg. She was a good tow vehicle and will be missed. But not for too long as a 7.3 powerstroke is taking her place. Not the fuel economy but a little bit of an upgrade.

I didn't change gearing. I think it's at a 14/38 right now. I had a 13 front and it was too low. Felt like I was always ripping through the first couple gears too much. The 14 helped out a lot there.

You can also play around with the preload on the power valve spring. You might want to try and tighten it up a few clicks. It will smooth out the transition coming on to the pipe

In order to keep from hitting neutral, most will start out in 2nd gear already, atleast in mx they do.  Great write up. Glad to hear you are hard at it!

that and 1st is far to short.  Especially when you got 6 speeds.

Alright let's talk dead engine starts.......what's everybody's technique?

I was practicing yesterday.....2nd gear starts, little bit of throttle, upon kicking forward I slam my ass on the seat for some traction. For a rookie I seemed to be getting off the line pretty quickly.

Every time I kick in gear at a start it never fires, will all day long just never at the start of a race. I start in neutral because I want to know it will start, not kick it and hit the seat only to find it is dead. Hard to hear it start over all the noise if you have many four strokes around you. That being said I saw a guy beat a 24V 450ER with a rekluse off the line, which involves simply pushing a button. Bruce beat everyone off our line by a bike length or more and I can tell you by watching the video he started in neutral and went to first just like I do so I am guessing reflex is the biggest factor more than anything else.

Hmm that's odd. Maybe fiddle with the clutch adjustment a bit?

I was practicing again today and I really got the hang of it in second gear.

But that's a great point about not being able to hear the engine. Didn't think about that

My guess is the bottom end oil is still too thick and it doesn't react the way I expect it to, I could probably make it go but I would rather get out a little behind then way in the back. Being 1st isn't a huge deal for me but being last is, you can usually find a way around a few guys but a bunch of guys takes some serious work and you risk getting behind someone who is prone to making mistakes. Just how I approach it but I always go for the consistent start vs being 1st, if you don't start and think it is you lose way more time.

I got the procedure down pretty good now. It's almost one seamless motion between kicking forward and slamming my ass down on the seat for traction.

Piston at TDC, 2nd gear, kick forward, drop the clutch.

I'm gonna practice more today as well
