85 atc250r wiring plug
« on: January 07, 2021, 09:57:49 AM »
The 85 ATC250R has an odd ball CDI plug.  The plug cannot be purchased anywhere aftermarket.  One option is find a wiring harness from a different model (same make) and use the CDI plug however needed.  As an example....a 1985 atc 200x cdi plug next to a 1985 atc250r cdi plug.

You'll have to PM him for availability but ps2fixer over on 3WW was making adapters to use the newer style CDI's and may still have the connectors on hand. I can vouch for the quality of his work being top notch.

Thanks for posting up the info! I believe I’m a member on that forum but it’s been many years since I’ve logged on.  I’ll check to see if I can log on and then I’ll send a pm.  I’ll keep you guys posted on what I find out.

Ps2fixer (Cory) responded to a PM I sent him on 3WW.  Here’s the response I have asking about the wire harness CDI plug:

If you need the harness side, they aren't in product, have to hack one off an old harness (common for 84-85 machines including some motorcycles). If you need the CDI side, I have those, have to solder wires on thought. I use them to make adapters for a guy that makes CDI's using the modern 4+2 plugs. The 4+2 pins work in the round housings well enough, they are made for a rubber seal but you don't use the seal, so it's just to hold the wire to keep from breaking the wire over time (like a stress relief).

If you need any more info, let me know. I have the original part numbers and such from the orig mfg. I've been looking on and off for years for the harness side of the connection. It's possible to have them reproduced in china, but min qty is like 10,000 and would probably cost like $7000. If I expected to sell 100 harnesses with that connector, that would put the cost of the connector at $70 each. Napkin math, but kind of explains why no one else has invested in them either.

Thanks,

Cory

I had Corey make a new harness for my 85 round plug and he also sent me a jumper to adapt to the 86-89 dual plug should I decide to change it over. The harness looked like it could be OEM and really cleaned up the birds nest that was on it. The previous owner had installed a tether kill switch and the wires were twisted together with electrical tape over them.
