Hi guys, my cousin has finally decided to sell me his 250r  the motor blew up in 1999. This beast has been sitting in a shed for 20 plus years. My son and I  going to take on the project and build this quad. Hoping there are parts available for this journey . Hopefully we can wake up this sleeping legend.

Congratulations! I have been building a couple 250R'S with my two boys and it has been a blast! Just a few words of caution...... I started with a single 250R for myself and then 2 for my boys, now I have an ATC build going and enough parts to build a couple more TRX's. My point is that these things are addictive lol. Good luck with your build and have fun with your son!

Well I picked up the motor today. Was really hoping it had not been taken apart. Well here’s the pics of the motor, I am sure there are things missing, but it looks like most of it is there.  The middle cases where the side of the crank is of some concern, any advise on repairing or should it be left alone. One case is cracked, the other is very rough.

You are getting the full experience.

Regarding the cases, I doubt they are cracks. Very common to have casting marks around the bearings. If you take a real close look at them you will probably see the casting. Look real close at the chamfer around the main. If it is a crack it would propagate through the chamfer.

The other case looks like something for in-between the crank and the case. Piston maybe? Possible it have a crank that lost a tin

Awesome build. I am jelly

I 2nd the casting flaws. Give it a good scratch. It should be solid. Look at the good side you, don't have to take it apart!

I have a set that looks similar. I wanted to send them off to be looked at to be sure, but never did. I cant see anything on the other side, or anything into the bearing bore either. mine seems to extend up towards the cylinder dowel area too.
I've watched many go through ebay without any mention at all FWIW.  So it does seem at least a little common, from what i've seen.
I'm curious to others opinions as well.

Welcome to org. It's cool that it's been in your family & you know the history of it... When you remove the crank bearings inspect the pockets & as long as it doesn't look like there's a crack in there than that's most likely just a casting mark like others have said. By the way that engine & the fuel tank is 88 or 89. You can look up the number on the engine to know exactly.
