I think the 02 came with the S-8 needle jet already installed, the 01 had the S-9 I know for sure which is what gave it a bad reputation as being a junk carb. On my buddy's 01 CR all I did was change to an S-8 needle jet, 400 main & I believe I used a 32.5 pilot & that bike became a completely different animal!... One thing about Mikuni's though if you don't like tinkering on carb's don't buy one.

Carbs aren't my favorite thing to do but I don't mind tinkering with them.Before I got into trikes and atvs I messed with motorcycles and snowmobiles some machines  had old round slide Mikunis I did pretty well with those.I checked the needle tube and its an s-9.It was laying in the bottom of the box the carb came in.Could be 01 carb.  broken1 thanks for the info.

I picked this tm 38 up a few years ago with a DG aircooled 250r intake. It is missing the cap and slide valve .I'm thinking about buying the parts for it.Jets r us have them.Price would be around $ 120 for everything needed.

The carb in top pic has tmx on the side of the slide throat.The carb in the other two pics is a tm carb according to jets r us site when I Google the numbers on the carb. The pic in this post is the parts schematic of the tm carb.

@Jerry Hall
Had a really good write of the TM carb and the difference between it and the TMX.
