Frame/swingarm combo help
« on: November 05, 2021, 08:53:15 AM »
Can someone please help my confirm what I am looking at? Pretty certain frame is an 88 and came with a title so I’m confident in that. Also pretty sure it is an 86-87 swingarm but the spacer in the center looks factory. This is my first R so I am second guessing myself.

Also any insight into what shocks these are would be appreciated. They are pretty beat up and basically springs at this point.

Yes 88 frame with a 86/87 swing arm.  The mount (spacer) has the top “ears cut” off….it is a factory 86/87 part.

X3 on the Works shocks both front & rear. It's hard to tell in the pic but does your rear shock have a plastic or aluminum body? I have a Works Ultracross rear that has a plastic body & have only ever seen one or two others like mine.

looks like you've also got 86-87 A-arms.  Good chance someone had a 86-87, and needed to replace the frame so they got a 88 frame and swapped everything over.

Send those shocks to seth fligge and get the PEP transplant done.  http://www.sfracingonline.com/home/4537027438

Thank you everyone for the insight.

Thank you for pointing out the a-arms. I planned on going with aftermarket a-arms and swingarm so I wasn’t terribly worried about them. Your point about everything being swapped from and older frame makes a lot of sense. Any suggestions on how I can determine what year motor it is?

I will look into Seth as soon as I am sure what arms I am using.

Post some pics of the engine if you can..... There's a vin tag toward the bottom on side of the left case.

Also the front of the case is different for 88/89. The cut out for the front engine mount bolt is different. The trouble with these damn R's is that they are old and people have been doing all they can to keep them alive so they end up being a collection of parts from all years.

VIN number is missing from the case. From what I have read I am thinking atvmxr is is correct and everything is 86-87 with the exception of the frame. Cylinder looks to have Trinity engraved in it. Runs great but leaks from everywhere.

Looks like an 86 engine but its possible it could be an 87. Most likely not since they made a lot more 86's than any other year. Those squared off casting marks that go around the top of the water jacket are on the 85 & 86 cylinders. Those casting marks are also on the 87 cylinder but the 87 cylinder has intake bridges like the 88 & 89 so you have to pull the reed cage & look inside to verify. Pretty sure it's 86 though like atvmxr said, the a-arm's are 86 for sure because they are the only year with the bushings & seals like your's has. In 87 they went to a spherical bearing in the a-arms instead of a bushing so they don't use those big seal's like the 86 has.
