Engine and Bottom End / Need help with ignition issue
« on: March 19, 2015, 10:56:08 AM »
After checking out the MSD and the Vortex I think they are way cool but also way more than my project needs. I also saw a box made by dynatech. Has any one used it or has any spec on how it changes the powere curve?

Again thanks for all the input so far.

I checked out the MSD offering. It looks really cool and I'm sure it would pack the punch I'm looking for BUT.... It looks like it needs a battery and the timing curve needs to be programmed. Two things I don't care to deal with on this project.

I just had my motor ported by Jerry Hall. My first trip out i experienced exactly the issue you are having. With the same solution. Previous to the cylinder and headwork, i had no issues. Jerry told me he recommended running .018-020 on his motors. Im not saying a better ignition would not help. This is why i am now going to try a vortex and prob an msd. The bike is running great, but i also want to see if a better ignition would help.

This problem existed on a recent ride befor I did a little work (.010 head gasket, pwk 38mm carb, and 100 octane fuel) but after the work the problem became major. I think the issue became bigger because of the increase in compression. I am interested to know more about MSD ignitions because I have used them on V8 and 4cyl turbo applications and have been very happy with the performance.

It will be a while befor I get out again. I was planning a trip on the 20th but it has been canceled. Thank you Rupp for the loaner parts offer and sorry I never got back to you on the fender support. I am still wondering is it worth replacing the stator and/or the CDI? Or should I just run with the small plug gap

Thanks for the information jimbo. I read through your thread befor I posted this one. My parts physically look good but I have not tested resistance yet. I worked out the jetting as soon as I closed up the spark plug gap. The coil is new cuz the old one the plug wire was rotten. I know the wiring and connectors are in order cuz I went through it all when I put lights back on.

The engine is running top notch now but if I open up the plug gap past .018 it starts breaking up.

I just put a pwk 38mm on my R. I did it because I was trying to solve a running problem that caused the engine to break up at higher rpm and felt like a fouling spark plug or the first few seconds after starting with the choke when the engine is clearing out.

The problem was still there with the new carb. After messing around with spark plugs I tried gapping at .018 and boom problem solved.

So my conclusion is one or more parts of the almost 30 year old ignition are getting weak.

My questions are,
Has any one experienced this problem and do you have a resolution.
If the CDI needs to be replaced what is the difference between the 86,87 and the 88,89 box.
And I would apreciat any other input any one has on this topic.

Thanks in advance

Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / Need help with pwk carb throttle cable
« on: February 26, 2015, 09:56:48 PM »
I just picked up a 38 pwk carb from ESR. After a quick chat with one of the guys over there he informed me the cable they stock for their carb is for a thumb throttle and I'm running the motion pro turbo twist throttle.
After fitting up the carb (intake bell machined by ESR for stock air box) and it fit perfect! I threaded the cable through the cap and SCREECH!! My party train came to a halt.
The brass adjuster on the cap is too small to fit the cable sheath end. Dose any one know the proper part for this aplication? If you have one you don't need maybe we can make a deal. Thanks for the help in advance.

Wanted / WTB rear fender support wire.
« on: February 26, 2015, 06:13:05 PM »
I need a rear fender wire support for an 86 250r. I just picked up a set Meier  rears. I thought I could run em with no wire but as soon as I mounted em I could tell they are way too floppy. If some one has one in the California SF Bay Area I could borrow to copy that would work too.

If I remember right the only difference is the spouts. the 88-89 are straight and the 86-87 are elbows.

Thanks for the info. If anyone else has any more info I would love to hear it.

I have been looking at nifty silicone hoses for sale and I recently saw a used set on here and some one asked what year radiator they were for. I know my R is a mash up of many years so I would like to identify what radiator is on it. The only thing I know for sure is the frame is 86. Thanks in advance for the help.

Engine and Bottom End / race wire harness

I know there is a service manual download on the site and it has the schematic for the stock electrical system. You should be able to build a harness from that.

I am fond of the mk1 body style. Because my dad had a 72 1600 and that was the first manual trans I learned to drive. I was always impressed with the handling. I do not how ever have any room in the budget for another hobby.... Just ask my wife she will tell you like she tells me every day but thank you for looking out.

Engine and Bottom End / What compression ratios can use pump V/race

I ported my own cylinder with a micro die grinder that cost me $60 & an old dremel. I'm by no means a professional engine builder but my R ain't no slouch & I been running it hard for over 25 years. Anything can be done if you have the knowledge & will.

I know enough about 2 stroke port timing to be dangerous but not enough to make good dependable power. I ported a pocket bike engine once just to see what would happen and I raised the exhaust port too high and it would make massive high RPM power but the lack of low end made it useless and eventually blew apart because the Chinese parts were not ready for the RPM.

I respect the man who will take the time to get the knowledge but the price of a new cast cylinder with porting, revised cooling and a o-ring head with adjustable domes is $750.
If I work in my trade it's about $50 per hour so for 15 hours of work I got dependable power. I know I can't learn it, get the tools and do it in 15 hours.

Big ups to you for what you have done. I'm sure it makes you feel that much better when you put it down on other riders with all their fancy store bought stuff and you are riding a bike that you hand built.
