Engine and Bottom End / Head Gasket Concerns

Multi-layer head gasket 12254-HB9-013  fits the 87 4 Trax and is around .055" thick.  I usually use the multi-layer head gasket 12254-KS7-881 that fits the 85 ATC 250 R as well as many of the CR250 in the mid to late 1980s and is about .040" thick.

Thanks for the info. I installed the HB9, and it was .055 thick, I verified the measurement. Hopefully it makes decent compression.

Just spoke with LSR customer service, they said to box it up and send it back at their expense, and they'd have a look. According to the tech I spoke to, the antifade should be a slip fit, shouldn't require any persuasion/heat. Sounds like if they think there's an issue with the depth of the splines in the axle or locknut that they'll replace them. This is awesome of them.

Lonestar Axel and lonestar lock nut?

Yup. That's what's got me perplexed.

Anyone else have a bitch of a time getting the antifade nut onto an axcalibar axle? I even broke out the dead blow hammer (soft one), and decided to disassemble it before all went horribly wrong. Wtf....?

Suspension and Chassis / Front Hubs - Binding

im pretty sure you can buy a bearing kit from all balls that hs them

I'll have to look into that. In the meantime, I removed the bearings from one of the hubs, and built it onto the spindle - inner race of inside bearing against the machined step of the spindle, distance ring, outer bearing, thrust washer/collar. Got out the trusty torque wrench and locked the castle but down to 57 ft/lb. Whaddya know, the bearings spin freely, no bind. Looks like I may not have had them seated properly in the hub. So, back to it. I'll bring the hubs into work tomorrow, and as much as I hate to with them being powdercoated, I'll heat em with the inductive bearing heater. I'll leave the bearings in the blast chiller until last second and (hopefully) slip em right in. As of now it looks like operator error... Ugh. Thanks for all the help. Will update.

Suspension and Chassis / Front Hubs - Binding

Do you have the spacers that go on the outside of the hubs? The ones that sit inside the seals on both the inside and outsides of the hubs. I've done the same thing before. Brain fart lol

Spacers are present for the outside of the hub, the distance collar for the bearings is between the hubs. Seems as if I'm missing this spacer that goes to the inside of the hub? I was under the impression that the bearing rode against the machined step of the spindle. Looks like I was wrong :|
So, question is, if these inner spacers have gone missing, how screwed am I? Is there any chance of finding a pair somewhere? Shit.

Got the hubs back from PC, no powder where it shouldn't be, did a great job. Pressed the new bearing in, spacer/distance ring, other bearing, then the oil/dust seals. Everything is nice and smooth. Installed the hubs onto the spindle, the second I get the castle nut tight, it fn binds up. Thing is, the service manual calls for 57 ft/lbs of torque on the castle nuts - I'm nowhere near that, and binding. Anyone else have similar experiences and care to share a potential solution? I'll probably start over, fresh bearings and whatnot, just unsure as to why this is becoming an issue. Thanks.

Motor in the process of being built. Running into a few "normal" issues, one bolt hole on the right hand crankcase cover doesn't want to grab threads. Pulling cover this weekend and will heli-coil the offending hole. Need to do the same with the oil drain plug, thought about going oversize (14mm), but it seems easy enough to just pop a heli-coil in there as well. Waiting on the N.O.S. head gasket and the fastener order to come in. I placed an order with Fastenal for the OEM-style flange bolts and button-head stainless bolts for the covers. Whichever looks nicer once I swap them out for the old crusty ones will be the winner.

Ordered a NOS 12254-HB9-013 gasket, this is what was called out by the parts fiche provided by Service Honda for an 87 250R. Hoping it's the correct one, my communications with the seller lead me to believe as such, come Monday I'll know. Thanks for all the assistance, will update when it arrives.

Thanks for the info/advice. Heading to eBay to order an OEM gasket based on the Honda part number. As far as having the head machined for an o-ring, is there a vendor or service shop you can recommend for this?

Engine and Bottom End / Head Gasket Concerns

Putting the engine back together - the head gasket that came out of it is a 3 piece with metal center (1987 TRX250R). The gasket in the Cometic top-end kit I bought is a single piece, pretty thin :\
1. Can the original head gasket simply be reused if it's in good shape?
2. What's the deal with the 3 piece gasket vs the thinner aftermarket one?
Advice/experience/comments welcomed.....

So, my polisher had a nice holiday surprise for me, the jug and the head are done and delivered

Next week I'll build the motor back up and hopefully put it in the frame, start getting her ready to ride.

Only way to go, their stuff is top-notch. I struggled for a week or two before settling on that particular blue. I didn't want to go with the typical candy, wanted something a bit different.
