Introductions / Hello All

Thanks for the warm welcome from everyone. Couldn't be happier with them, both are in excellent shape. No set plans for them yet beobe99, I've thought about modding both or just one but I also really like the fact that they're stock and I'm a little spooked about hurting their reliability and durability with too many mods. Mostly tight woods riding in this area with some quick medium length straits in the mix. It's kind of funny that the family friend/mechanic that's helping me go through them and making sure everything is right and tight is the same guy(my dad's friend) who owned the original bike I rode when I was a 9 year old kid!

35 mile ride this morning with the BR8ES plugs in both bikes and no issues, great!

Thanks for the reply wilkin250r, the plug was getting spark at all times. No air leaks that we could locate. We had already eliminated a fuel delivery problem. Our original thought was that maybe the coil had a weak spot and once everything was up to normal operating temperatures that after expansion we were getting a weak spark.

Think we got it figured out but won't be totally sure till Saturday. Both bikes came with NGK BR9ES plugs in them. Tried running BR8ES plugs and it hasn't died since. Is it possible that the BR9ES plugs were getting a little to wet at lower rpms and slightly fouling then the fuel was evaporating off and the oil was thin enough to fire again after a little bit of time?

Reason for buying 2......never hurts to have a back up, LOL!  Short version of the story, rode one when I was 9yrs old with one of my dads friends and loved it. Always wanted one but never found the right opportunity at the right time to buy one. Raced motocross for awhile and always mostly rode dirt bikes when I got older. Quit racing and haven't ridden for quite awhile and some buddies decided to get quads and start playing around. Decided I'd start hunting one to go play around on and did a Craigslist search and stumbled into a mostly stock pair that (as the story goes) was originally purchased at the same time and have been sold together through a couple different owners and I was in a good position to purchase both if I could get what I thought to be a good deal and so.....I now have a pair of 86's!

Hello All,

First time poster here and apologies if this is in the wrong location.

New 250R owner here with a problem someone might have experienced.

 I recently purchased a pair of 86 250R's, they both appear to be and are supposed to be stock with the exception they both have FMF exhaust systems on them and one has aftermarket headlights and a graphics kit. They both had the stock tires, grips, etc. and neither one look like they've ever had the top ends or any other part of the motors apart since new in 86. They both even appear to have the original grips in good shape.

 The compression is good in both machines with no air leaks anywhere, the jetting is good with the plug looking like it should after a plug chop, the problem I'm running into is that after riding one of them for about 30min and its good and warm it will die and doesn't like to start(or won't on occasion) right away. It will fire up just fine after cooling a little bit. I have swapped the CDI boxes from one to the other to check that but it didn't change anything. It appears to be something electrical and I'm sure I will find it eventually but thought I would ask if anyone had run into this problem before and might be able to point me in the right direction quicker.
