Projects / Universal mill or lathe Tourqe plate fixture
« on: January 18, 2016, 01:29:33 PM »
I'm making a tourqe plate fixture to bore R cylinders.

Base plate is almost done. Need to put 4 metric studs in it and dowel pin holes.

Still need to make head plate. I am going to make the head plate out of .750" thick aluminum. This should work well being the measurement from the 6 spotfaces on top of the head to the head gasket face is .700"

Projects / Cylinder & head
« on: January 18, 2016, 01:16:27 PM »
Pulled the head & cylinder for the first time since I bought the quad.

I am going to do all machining myself.

I inspected the cylinder for taper, roundness, & size. To my surprise it is bored .100 over.Bore probes at 68.532mm (2.6981"). (Taper and roundness were both under .001" (Honda spec). I am going to run a wiesco brush hone in it, clean and fine sand any port burs. I will go with the lighter cast pro x piston and change it every 30 hours of riding. I plan on drilling 2 small diamiter holes on center of the front of the piston right behind the exaust bridge for more oil lubrication (if they aren't already there)

I'm hoping the piston diamiter will allow for a .0025" clearance to the cylinder. My 85ATC manual says .006" piston to cylinder clearance is the service limit. I will see when the piston arives. If its pushing .004" i think I will order the 69mm piston and machine the O.D. (outside diamiter) down to obtain a .0025 clearance to my bore size.

I'm sticking with the stock head. I'm going to machine the squish area widening that to match bore. While holding the same angle that is on the stock atc250r head. I don't know this angle yet but I think it's around 10° but I will check this with my lathe compond.

Engine and Bottom End / This Could Be The End!
« on: January 02, 2016, 08:28:27 PM »
I wouldn't jump to conclusions calling it a POS. Ive sent 2 cylinders back to Eddie. There maching department is or was mediocre (no offense just the facts). I checked a bore before instalment and it had over .011" taper in it,(Honda service manual spec is under .001") .011" taper is HUGE in ANY bore especially an engine cylinder. Also there was perosity in the bore.It was a painstaking process to even get ahold of esr. We were down for over 6 weeks. They do not care about the customer. Any motor, especially a high performance engine like this one, will not run right with sloppy machining. ESR offers the engine builder package because they got so much complaints about there machining and porting.

As stated there are NO port chamfers in that motor. You wants the rings to slide smoothly past the ports Not "click" when they drag past a sharp edge like that. I give ESR credit for admiting their flaws & offering the engine builder package. I know they just got a makino horizontal with new tooling. Hopefully this will improve their machining department. Glad your R is working out for you now.

Projects / feedback on the motor
« on: January 01, 2016, 01:39:25 AM »
First time ive been into this motor since purchase 3 years ago. I want to make this more along the lines of a "sleeper " motor.

Checked compression cold, kicked about 185 cold. I believe it's bored .02 over (haven't measured bore yet to confirm this.) New crank recently. V force 3 reeds. Brand new updated clutch.

What kind of port job this look like?

Should I hone this cylinder? Looks really smooth yet.

What's the piston telling you guys? Looks like some carbon buildup? Could be due to the squish clearance being .096"? There was a .045" head gasket on motor. Plan on Ordering the .010 steel head gasket and a new wiesco piston. Instal those. check squish clearance again. Don't know how critical that spec really is.. I've read to get that spec around .045 using the solder method to check it? if i need to mill my stock head the aditional .010 or so i can do that.

Planning to put cr ignition and new exhaust on this R.

Here's a pic of my project R. 86 frame. Threw a clean 85atc motor in it. Put 450r A arms and swingarm on it. Gunna get some white rear fenders. Needs grab bar and bumper yet. Want to set this quad up to bang on the trails, hills, and sand pits. Sold all my yfzs for old school!

This has been a fun build I enjoy learning about these 250r's.

Looking at new pipe, Esr pipe or ct pipe?

Engine and Bottom End / CR 250 ignition...Why?

I found some used 01 ignitions on ebay about $600. will the 02-08 bolt up to the 85 motor?

Engine and Bottom End / TRX250R what to do next????
« on: December 27, 2015, 09:37:25 PM »
jimi check your squish clearance with a piece of solder. lot of good info about that on the web. I just checked mine on my new purchase (86trx with 85atc250r motor in it) and it was fairly simple. Im glad I checked it, my motor ran just fine but the squish clearance was .096" measured with a mic. Carlos from BDT reccomends .050" being the optimal measurement when checking this with the solder method. the head gasket that was on my machine measured .044" thick so i am going to run a .010" thick head gasket, recheck with solder and either shave my head or deck my cylinder to get my dome closer to the piston in that .050" range.

Engine and Bottom End / CR 250 ignition...Why?
« on: December 27, 2015, 09:23:47 PM »
thanks guys! i have a 86trx with a 85atc 250r motor in it. I am planning on getting the ESR plate, stator, flywheel, and cdi. should i get all the parts from the 2001 model cr250? is ebay my best bet for finding all components?
