Lower dome cc= more compression, higher cc= less... If you pull the carb & reed cage off anytime soon, take a good picture of the intake opening & post it & we could tell you if it's been worked on or if it's a virgin.
Thanks Broken1!  I appreciate that and will try to take a pic sometime soon.  It's unfortunate, but I don't know much about this 89 at all.  The guy I bought it from purchased it from the original owner and he pretty much bought it for resale.  The only thing he could say was that the bike was all stock, even though it has aftermarket silencer, pipe, head, reed cage, carb and air filter.

To find out you just pop the dome out of the shell but you may need a head gasket depending on how it's setup.
Thanks...  That makes sense.  I was on the Pro Design web site and it looks like they have quite a few domes in different millimeters.  I really have no idea what the different sizes do for power, etc.  Taking a stab in the dark I would guess the lesser the millimeter the more power produced?

A flat slide card would give you a little better low/mid power & throttle response. 12/39 gearing also works well in the woods with a stock cylinder. Have you opened up the top end to see if it's been ported?
Thanks for the advice.  Honestly I have never done any engine work and wouldn't know what a ported top end looks like.  My 89 TRX250R has a Pro Design Cool Head, but I don't know what model dome it has.

Pet, how technical is the riding area.  I've ridden in places where I'd be lucky to get into 3rd (miles and miles in 1st and 2nd).  ruts and mud.  at times so narrow that a stock bike (stock with) barely makes it though.  a Paul Turner Type 6 pipe is a low end pipe.  the PT Eliminator...not so much

Joe
Hi Joe, The technical riding you described is the type of riding I like to do.  Normally I ride this sort of terrain on my TRX450R, but at this point really want to focus on 2-Strokes and will probably sell the TRX450R if I can get the 89 TRX250R setup to work just as good or better than the 450R.  BTW, I figured the Eliminator pipe was a better option for the Oregon dunes than in the woods.  I assume the 39mm Carb will also need to be changed.

Call Arlan. He'll do what you want, where you want it. I wish he was in my area. I'd be there everyday.
Thanks for that confirmation.  I think he is about 3 hours by car North of where I live in Oregon.  I am sensing it will be well worth the drive.

I've rode with 2ndmoto before and a led bike would be one of those bikes just not what I like.

That's personal preference I like a mid to top motor for myself I kept stuff in the rpms.

You are right, it is definitely personal preference.  2ndmoto recommended that I talk to Arlan at LED Performance about a woods riding setup.  I looked on their web site and it seems like they configure woods bikes for low to mid RPM power.  I guess that would make sense for XC races.  You have some stretches where you can hit top speeds, but for the most part you need hole shot type power when coming out of tight turns, etc.

I ride my puma in the woods as well as the dunes, same with my old sphinx both are dune motors. One thing you should ask yourself is where do want the power to come on?
I think the best place to have power when riding in the woods would be at the bottm to mid RPM range.  What do you think?

I built all of them I like the power delivery of the old pro-x cylinder but that's all porting ,,, I talked myself out of the power valve but it shipped before I could cancel it,,,, it runs fine just don't think it was worth all the extra moving parts ,, and it has broke once already
Nice job on building the motors.  Also, thanks for the power valve info.  As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have not been too keen on getting one.  Just more parts that can go bad.

Before I had the puma I had a zilla and a 363 sphinx to me there's no need for a power valve for us in the Oregon dunes especially down in the tree shots.
Glad to know that bit of info.  I haven't been too keen on getting a power valve in all honesty.  Just another part to break.

Arlan at LED Performance is up in your area, based out of Gresham Or. Arlan has a legacy with woods setups. When 250r ruled the GNCC Arlan's motors were at the top. Barry Hawk and Bill Ballance ran his setups, I think he won 10 pro championships. He is a site sponsor and can be found via google.

Welcome to the site.

Best regards
-Jason
Thanks for the info on Arlan.  I will get in touch with him.  I go riding at the dunes usually once or twice a year, but head to the woods on a regular basis.  A woods setup is what I need.  Thanks again!

Hey all, I am pretty new to the 250R world.  Only have had my 1989 TRX250R for a few months now.  I am not sure if this is the correct forum category for this question, but if any of you guys ride technical stuff in the woods, what sort of motor / pipe setup would you recommend?  My 250R has a stock motor with PT ELIMINATOR pipe and Fat Boy 2 silencer.  Please let me know your opinions on this.  Thanks, Pete

3 big motors in all our trx's 350cc's  NO ISSUES!!!!  GO BIG OR GO HOME,,
Nice motors.  You build them or did someone else?  Whomever did it, that's nice work.  Looks like one power valve and one non-power valve.  Which motor runs the best?

I to have not had any issues with my 330. Since you are in Oregon. If looking for more out of your motor. Would definitely give Pete at hybrid a call. He does great work and fair on his prices.
Thanks for the advice Hickwheeler.  I will get in touch with him.

I've had no issues with any of my motors from a stock cylinder to a 431 puma.
That's good to hear!  I have known a couple of guys with 330 ESR setups that had nothing but problems with their motors.  From what I remember, they were always blowing up.  I believe the Duncan Racing web site says that a 275cc setup is the most reliable out of all their motor increase options.  I guess, it's probably like anything else.  Some engines are upgraded properly and others not so much.  Most of the guys I know around here (Roseburg, Oregon) are bailing wire and duck tape mechanics.  They have never seen a service manual and if they had one it would probably just be used as a beer coaster!
