Engine and Bottom End / Re: cylinder sleeves

Never heard of an  aluminum sleeve.  I assume it would need to be Nikasiled?

Engine and Bottom End / Ct350pv?

I think the rotax assembly will work with a CT cylinder.  I talked with Allen at CT a few years ago about doing that conversion and he said it would work.  You might have to do some machining so the exhaust passages meet up.  You might call Allen and ask since it is his design, but I think I'm remembering our conversation correctly.

Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / Smart Carb Feedback
« on: October 18, 2016, 04:38:47 AM »
I was thinking about running it on my Duncan PC2000 340.  Currently I have a 39mm Keihin PWK on it and it runs great.  I'm just in an experimental mood and remember a lot of excitement about the Smart carb.

I actually have Keihin and Mukuni carbs on my various quads and 3 wheelers, e.g., PWK, TM, and TMX.  I'm good at jetting and like them all.  I'm just looking to experiment with something different so I thought I might try the Smart Carb.  I suppose I could look at Lectron as well but I thought the Smart Carb was supposed to  represent an advance over previous single circuit designs.

Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / Smart Carb Feedback

I know there was a lot of excitement about the Smart Carb a while back, so now that I'm in the market for a new carburetor I'm wondering if they lived up to the hype? I know they had a problem with supply early on, people waiting months to get one. I just visited their website and it looks like they have their act together--no more long wait periods. I'm interested in the cast model. I heard the billet model allows for tighter tolerances but it is also more expensive by a couple hundred dollars. They also have a new casting supplier and it sounds like they fixed any earlier problems they had. Anyway, my question is whether it offers superior performance to a Keihin or Mukuni?

There is a guy on ebay, ZMP Performance I think, that still sells TRX 250R fenders in Fighting Red.  I think Maier does special runs for him.

Pics and Vids / My New 84 ATC 250R
« on: September 29, 2016, 05:27:17 PM »
I've been looking for a nice 84 250R and finally found one.  In fact, I bought some pretty rare and expensive parts before I bought the actual machine.  I've got a new 300 kit and Westcoast swingarm that will eventually be installed.  I'm looking to do an old school MX build.  For now, I'm going to keep it as is.  It's surprisingly zippy and fun in stock form, although the balloon tires leave a lot to be desired when it comes to handling.  I think balloon tires may be the primary reason 3 wheelers got banned.  Anyway, I thought you guys might enjoy a few pictures of a pretty clean 84 R, the newest member of my growing 3-wheeler family.

Thanks for the post--I didn't know about this place.  Looks like I'm going to get him to rebuild my rear shock using PEP parts.

Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / New intake

Since it uses a rubber collar to connect to the carb, I wonder if he could simply get a collar that tapers up to a larger carb bell?

We talked about that on the phone.  He looked for a larger collar but couldn't find one.  I don't think you would want a smaller intake track flaring into a larger carb anyway, it might offer less performance than stock.

I don't want to discourage you guys from calling Fuel Customs and talking with Garrett about it.  Maybe he will make one with a larger intake.

Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / New intake

I called Fuel Customs about this intake because I wanted to know if it was designed to fit the stock or aftermarket carb.  Most of us use a 38mm or 39mm aftermarket carb, which have a larger intake bell than the stock 34mm carb.  Anyway, he said he designed it for the stock carb.  He gave me the diameter--which I think was in the 50mm range--but it was smaller than my 62mm intake bell.  So, I don't think it will work with larger aftermarket carbs.

I love the TMX.  I bought another one just recently.  It gives it a very crisp throttle response and just feels good from bottom to top end.  It's a lot narrower than a Keihin, some 76 mm in width, so if you have a small space it fits.  The jets are easy to change.  The float bowl drain plug at the bottom actually holds the bowl in place (plus one little side screw), so you don't have to unscrew 4 phillips like on the Keihin.  It also only has 3 hoses coming off it, unlike the Keihin AS that looks like a bundle of hoses.  Mine came nearly perfectly jetted, although I did drop the pilot from 20 to 17.5.  I kept the main at 370.  For years I stayed away from Mikuni because I heard they were temperamental when it came to jetting, but that's not been my experience.

I got it from Niche Cycle Supply.  Good prices and fast shipping. http://www.nichecycle.com/ncs/mikuni/carburetors/tm38-27-mikuni-tmx38-flatslide-carburetor-44mm-by-mikuni.html

I don't know if the IMS pegs comment above was directed to me.  Anyway, the 86-87 TRX pegs work with the ATC.

After sitting for a few years I finally got my R together this past winter.  It's not a period correct build but it does have a few rare components from back in the 80s.  I still have a few changes I want to make, e.g., suspension mods, extended axle, but here she is so far.

Flat track tank
+2 Westcoast swingarm
Paul Turner Hi rev pipe
PWR radiators
Pro Design Cool Head (15cc dome)
Mikuni 38mm TMX carb
Hinson clutch basket
IMS foot pegs
Aluminum airbox
Shamrock rims

I have ran a 38 Keihin A/S on both my sons 250R and also on my 330R for quite a few years and have always been satisfied with that carb. Over the past couple of years a friend of mine suggested I try his Mikuni 38 TMX carb. Finally I decided to give it a try. It did take a little bit to get it dialed in but I found the TMX Mikuni did help with a better low end power with my particular setup. I ended up recently switching to the 2001 CR 250 Mikuni TMX and just love it. I have always taken notes on the jetting of both our quads with the Keihin for all 4 seasons of the year that we have here in Wisconsin.  If you do decide on the Mikuni carb, the one to get according to Eddie Sanders is the 2001 CR 250 one directly from Honda.  The part number for that carb is... 16100-KZ3-L12. It comes with a 420 main and a 35 pilot both of what were rich in my ESR 330. The needle 676BBH173 was spot on in the center clip position. Regardless of whether you choose the Keihin or the Mikuni take the time to keep notes on your jetting until it becomes second nature.

I remember seeing this version of the TMX on Eddie's website but I never could find it until now.  It's different than the one you'll get from Niche Cycle Supply.  Eddie doesn't have them listed on his website anymore.  I wonder why?  It looks like you can still get them from Honda for around $250.
