Lounge / PROX.....or is it PRO-X ???
« on: November 13, 2016, 01:43:30 PM »
Not to hijack a thread but another well known name in the industry is "Laeger".
Everyone I know has always pronounced it lay-ger but I've heard laysher, layshier, league-er. Honestly I'm not sure if I'm even pronouncing it correct.

Lounge / back surgery

Well, this is something I know all too well about. Thanks to a rear exit in 5th gear at Pismo, I F'd up 4 disks and fractured my sacrum. I herniated L1/L2, L3/L4 and ruptured L4/L5 and L5/S1. I had surgery to repair the two ruptured disks only. It was a very long recovery process for me but everyone is different. I did not have any fusions, they only removed large portions of the disk and the pieces that had protruded into my spinal cavity. To make things worse on my healing, I gained 40 lbs due to lack of exercise. I had surgery 6 years ago and it wasn't until about 1 year ago that I can say I achieved about 95% of where I was before the accident. I still get shooting pains and tingles and have resonating nerve issues. I personally would not get a fusion. Just to give you an idea of where I was before my surgery........ I could only walk about 40 feet at a time and had to sit down. Any longer and the pain was too severe to tolerate. During the time from when I injured myself to when I had surgery there were three occurrences when I moved the wrong way and became temporarily paralyzed. If you have not had the pleasure of losing all control of your lower extremities, the only way I could describe it would be to imagine the worst possible panic attack you could ever have..... then triple that. When I finally had my first MRI, it revealed that approximately 90% of my spinal cord was pinched at L4/L5. The doctor was baffled that I was walking at all. After the disceptomy was performed, the immediate pain was gone but the muscles that they had to cut through to get in there were horribly painful. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

On the recovery side or in your case pre-surgery. I would recommend one thing to you....... Inversion Table such as Teeter Hang-ups or the cheap one from Big5. I am 6'1" and 240 lbs. It is uncomfortable on my ankles but manageable. You won't get immediate results, it takes your body a while to adjust. Hanging upside down is not natural and your body knows it. You have to condition yourself to the feeling of being upside down. I would suggest wearing work boots that are taller than your ankle to aid in the joint stress. So after the mental and physical challenges, you will find yourself able to extend closer and closer to a full vertical inversion. This is when you will start to get results in your back. Remember to take it slow, don't hang for too long of a period at first. It is better to go up and down repeatedly rather than hang for too long. You will start to feel stronger in your lower back and have less nerve issues. I mean I value my inversion table almost as much as my wife. Consult with your doctor but I know several other people who were able to avoid surgery by using inversion therapy. As my back has gotten stronger I have been able to reduce that amount that I use my table. I always over-do things though and my back still tells me when I do then I'm back on my table for a week or two.

For whatever it is worth, just my $.02

I am feelings soooo old right now and I'm only 36. I got my first 250 at age 8. It was an 84 three wheeler. Then at 10 I got my first "water pumper"... all be it in pieces. 85 three wheeler. I bought the roller from a friend who raced micro sprints. Then bought a brand new take out engine that I actually still own. In 91 at 13 I bought my first 250r quad. Before the r's I had a 200x that we used to haul inside the motor home (through the side door). My first trip to Pismo was in 1981 and I still have the scar as proof. Back then doubles weren't illegal and everyone wore open faced helmets. A family friend gave me a ride on his brand spankin new 81 250r three wheeler and we hit a wash out. I was sitting in front of him on the tank and went face first into the triple clamp ripping open about an inch of my face next to my right eye.

I am lucky enough to have tons and tons of great story's from the "glory days"

The one thing I keep thinking now that I have an 8 year old boy is "WHAT THE F@$K" were my parents thinking !!! I can't figure out how it is that I never got seriously hurt when I was little (other than my scar). When I was 30 I crushed two disks but prior to that I crashed at least 200 times. I still have a hard time not feeling like Super Man when I'm on my bike. Wide F'n Open or not at all !!!!

Lounge / couple ? about rear hub compatibility
« on: December 29, 2014, 08:11:57 PM »
To answer part of your first question, Trx 450r axles have a different spline count than the 250r's. The hubs do not cross. I have a set of hiper hub mounts that were for a 450r and didn't fit. I was lucky enough to find someone with the same but opposite problem so we swapped hubs.

I like your design. Another thought that I had but haven't tinkered enough yet to get around to it was to mount the alternator to the swing arm but in line with the chain. I was thinking of using a toothed sprocket for the alternator pulley and a spring to apply tension. Basically using the chain as the belt.

I have a friend with a crf 450 hybrid. He had the stator re-wrapped and it can now support 250 watt's. I think he used Ricky Stator.

On my R I run a Ricky Stator high output and I prefer it over the CR ignition. (Mainly because I ride a lot at night.) The performance gain just wasn't a fair trade-off.

mrtwidster1............ Yep, exactly like that one only not as shiny. Those cylinders were cool back in the day and really hard to find now.

etccb.......... I still have one of my CR heads and the Y pipe set up. I ran across it a while back and it brought back memories.

I will have to find the photo album. Back then digital hadn't been invented yet. Lol ........... Good Ol' 35mm.

If I can't find a pic, I might have the dirt wheels article somewhere. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I bought my hyperdyne from Duncan a really long time ago along with a Paul Turner pipe and silencer.

Duncan used it on a baja 500 project bike that was in Dirt Wheels. The cylinder that I purchased was used and I was told it came from their baja project. I'm not sure if it was the same cylinder from the magazine article or not but either way it ripped but I didn't like the powerband. It more closely resembled a 300 shot of nitrous.

In second grade my sons teacher asked me to come in for a parent teacher meeting (single dad).  She suggested Anthony had ADHD. She was saying he's just not normal. When asked what the 4 seasons were his response was soccer, football, hunting and fishing seasons. I guess all the other kids said spring, summer, winter and fall.

LMAO !!!!

That sounds exactly like something my boy would come up with.

If you ask my second grader what to do if a stranger is breaking into your house...... His response is go get the gun and shoot their @$$. Apparently the correct response was call 911.

My kid keeps getting caught retaliating. After I grew up getting picked on, I have encouraged him to defend himself.... well that is frowned upon in today's society. A forth grader pushed my second grader down... so he got up and choked out the 4th grader.... The school wasn't very happy. I was so proud that day.

I just realized I misspelled "dumb".... oops.

I grew up in an auto racing family so I learned Cam Timing, valve lash, piston clearance, etc. When I was 8 was when I first started rebuilding my dirt bike motors (with help from my dad).

I understand all of the mechanical aspects of 2 strokes but not the intricacies of finite tuning. I have made lots of set up mistakes along the way, mostly due to comparing power gains in relation to 4 stroke engines.

"More is better!!!"........... well I learned not always.

It is so easy to have a bada$$ 250r with every possible thing added to it and then it run like crap.

I bet there are lot's of people on this site that thought they would gain tons of power just by adding a stroker crank to their R...... two words = port timing

I know that when you take a long rod 265 with an ATAC cylinder, add a 41mm carb, and a CT whale pipe..... Not so bueno.

Now, take the same engine and throw on a 36mm carb, and a Paul Turner mid-range pipe and...... Holy Sheep $H17 BATMAN !!!!!!

I don't understand exactly how each thing is effected but I do know the benefits of have matched set ups vs throwing on everything you can find cheap on ebay.

Sorry for diving off topic..... here is a redirect....

Has anyone ever ran any CR cylinders or a Hiperdyne?  Better yet, anyone ever heard of a Hiperdyne?

My favorite cylinder of all time was my ATAC CR250 cylinder. I believe it came from like an 84 or 85 CR250, it was a non powervalve cyl. much like a modern pro-x or ESR

I also use 88-90 CR HPP cylinders with power valve block offs set to wide open....... no bottom end but man they screamed.

The Hiperdyne was I believe an early version of what became the pro-x. It was an awesome cylinder but I never could get my set up correct with it.

OK, dump question or statement or thought to ponder here.....

Most engine guys seem to think the same way for the most part. Open up the intake and smooth out the exhaust. Which is correct on a 4 stroke where your only using 1 side of the piston.

On a two stroke where the bottom side of the piston both draws the mixture in and then compresses it to push it into the cylinder. Wouldn't removing more metal from the bottom of the cylinder effectively increase the total volume inside the crankcase and thus lower the pressure created by down stroke of the piston. The lower the crankcase pressure, the less total volume of mixture that will get into the cylinder and thus less efficiency.

I can see increasing port opening in the sleeve and runners but your not getting linear flow over the port dividers so turbulence shouldn't be an issue.

FYI.... I don't do my own porting, I have just wondered for years...

4 strokes can be related to DC voltage, linear air/fuel flow much like liner voltage power to ground
2 strokes are like AC voltage where the fuel mixture goes back and forth much the same way that current reverses.

Just my stupid ramblings.....

Wow, it is interesting to me how many have chimed in on this subject. My son just turned 8 and is repeating second grade. We made the choice to hold him back due to sub-par reading skills. Last year we discovered that my son was near sighted and couldn't see what was going on in front of the class. We got him glasses but it was too late for him to catch up. We had started him in school early so he is actually with kids his age now. This year he has become disruptive in class. Several people have suggested ADHD and that we need to get him tested. My theory is that A. He's bored because he learned most of this last year. and B. He isn't interested in learning normal stuff. This is a kid that has a vocabulary of a high school kid and understands how to use large complex words in the correct context but refuses to read. He is addicted to MineCraft and has constructed complete cities. He can skin the hair off a gnat's a$$ with a twenty two even after I intentionally F'd up the scope settings. I see a lot of myself in him. I grew up as the smart kid "nerd". I was such a nerd that I scored perfect scores on the State tests and had to retake them because they thought I cheated. My wife is on the ADHD bandwagon but I see him doing the exact same things as I did. I'm against chemical education but the school has a very very low tolerance for misbehavior. His teacher has been teaching since Abraham Lincoln was president and after meeting her at back to school night I was thoroughly surprised at her lack of preparedness. But let's blame it on the kids and say they have ADHD.

Great topic. At least I don't feel like I'm the only one with modern child development questions.

It looks like there are probably a lot of us here for family reasons. My family has gone through some serious changes over the last 8 years and I am pretty much anchorless on my side but my wife's sister just had a baby so I can go to Texas like I want to..... or stay married..... I don't feel like going through another divorce in the family so I get to live here and complain. I just can't wait for the new gas tax....yaaaa!!!!

What I don't understand is how CA expects all of us to keep paying registration for our off road toys when they keep closing more and more areas. When you look into where the funds actually go it is ridiculous. I live about 20 minutes from Kings Canyon National Monument, that has turned into a yuppy site seeing area but the sad thing is the wilderness surrounding the monument is now so heavily regulated you really can't even shoot guns. The few OHV trails that are there are horribly boring. The park rangers will impound your vehicle for riding on dirt fire roads without street registration. I had to ask a ranger where I could shoot and out of the 100's of thousands of miles of wilderness there are two areas to target shoot. Times are changing.
