Engine and Bottom End / Wet Base Gasket
« on: June 18, 2016, 10:52:19 PM »
I use a thin coating of Threebond on my base gaskets for added insurance. As previously stated, use sparingly, just enough to put a thin even coating on the gasket. Threebond/Yamabond/Motoseal are pretty much the same stuff by different names, but all work extremely well. I know that Rotax does not use crankcase gaskets at all and uses Threebond type sealant only when they assemble sled engines at the factory. It also has adhesive qualities.

I also use Threebond when I modify chainsaws with base gasket deletes.

It looks to be in good shape. I ran this carb before with my origonal motor wich was also stock with 20 over bore all stock pipe, reeds, filter with airbox lid on and it would eat stock and slightly modded banshees all day. Im hoping the race gas will help.

Highly doubtful....

NO complaints with either. :)

For your stator: http://www.rickystator.com/

I have one of their stators in in of my R and it has been excellent.

What CDI are you running? OEM I hope. Aftermarket CDI's are well documented to be problematic, I experienced that myself. When you say it acts like it's hitting a rev limiter, that could be a jetting deficiency, or one of the classic problems many of us experienced with aftermarket CDI's.

Sputtery on take-off could mean you still need to dial in your pilot jet and/or slide needle position or even needle profile.

Carburetor, Intake, and Exhaust / Jetting suggestions for my 86 R

Service manual I downloaded says that 86 had a 150 main and 48 pilot

Hmm, that's interesting. My Honda service manual is for the ATC's and that was the spec listed for the '86. I wonder if there was a change after my manual was published.. Either way, I think you will be plenty safe at 160 and 48.

I would recommend getting an assortment of jet sizes for both main and pilot jets. Yeah, at 6 bucks a piece it adds up but you'll be glad you did.

Just looked in my Honda service manual. Stock jetting specs for '86 was #145 main and #42 pilot. Sounds like you are running a near stock cylinder with exhaust. I'd start 2 sizes richer than stock specs on each, that should keep you safely rich. I would bet that it will settle in the mid 150's on the main and 45 or so on the pilot. I wouldn't be a bit surprised of the pilot jet in it now is too rich at 48. Just a guess here, but was it real blubbery and lacking in power down low till it "cleaned out" as you gained RPM during acceleration?

I get it if you opt to start out richer at 170 and 48 though. Nothing wrong with playing it safe.

I currently only have Keihin's but will be trying a TMX soon. I think these two carbs bring up a debate much like a Holley vs a Carter/Edelbrock in the car world. I was always told to stay away from Holley in my car days & only ran Carter/Edelbrock but I ended up getting a Holley & now I have a bunch of them & wouldn't run anything else except for maybe a quadrajet.

I think this is spot on.

I had Ski-Doo sleds that ran TMX's if I'm not mistaken and they never gave me any trouble. Granted, I never got into modding them the way I have with my R, so jetting changes were rarely needed. Mikuni has been around a long time, and for good reason. No hate for Mikunis here... :) I just have had very good results with my Keihins on my Hondas and never had a need to look elsewhere

I've run the 38AS on an OEM cyl with nothing but bolt-on mods and I was very pleased with it. It ran very strong, including down low, and responded predictably to jetting changes. I ran that same carb on my trike when I did a 350 big bore and it worked well on that too. I have since swapped to a 41.2mm PWK on the 350 as it is a better fit to the build theme and so far have been pleased with that choice. Not to say the 38AS didn't perform well on the big bore, it did. I just feel that the 41.2 is a better fit in that situation.

The 38AS carb works very well on alot of different applications. Hard to go wrong if you choose one.

Another alternative you might consider is the 39mm PWK. Not being an AS type carb, it will be easier to bore out should you end up with a big bore cylinder and decide you want more carb down the line. Carb boring is cheaper than a whole new carb. I initially asked Eddie Sanders if he could bore my old 38AS and he said while it can be done, it can be a real pain due to the vanes in the venturi. He recommended I trade in my 38AS for the ESR bored 41.2 standard PWK so that's what I did.

Based solely on what I have seen said, the quad vent setup on the AS carb is mainly beneficial in applications where one is hitting jumps frequently, mainly MX. I am not an MXer so I cannot say if it is true or not based on my limited experience. I would defer to the wisdom of folks more experienced in this area for final judgement on that.

I recently replaced my PWK38AS with an ESR PWK bored to 41.2mm on my ESR 350. So far I am very pleased with it and I have not noticed any drawback about it in terms of only being a standard dual vent compared to the quad vent with the type of riding I do.. After all, how many years were dual vent carbs in use before the quad vent came out?

Eddie is sometimes hard to get in contact with, but understandably so.

I had some trouble after I sent him a carb to swap to a 41.2. I was only getting worried that maybe my carb got lost in transit. Almost 2 months passed and it was just because he was busy... And I am not bashing Eddie at all, I completely understand...

The thing that impressed me about the whole deal was that he manned up and apologized for the delay and then when my new carb arrived it was accompanied by one of his new carb/jet wrench and $45 worth of extra jets. I did not ask for this and he didn't say a word about it in correspondence. I will continue to do business with Mr. Sanders in the future. But I expect there can be some wait time. Hell of a good guy if you ask me. :)

Don't think Eddie does not check out the praise we give him. He is so busy there is no possible way he could respond to a hundred or thousand customers. But I am sure he comes by to see what is troubling us. Eddy is the true 250r god. We all praise him everytime we buy his products. Affordable cylinders and pipes that keep us all happy!!!

Well, I can certainly understand why he doesn't have the time to post. But I am glad to know he swings in here and see what is going on. What better way to keep a finger on the pulse of your customer base?

I too would like to put in some good feedback for Eddie...

I am already running one if his trx9 ported 350 topends with his exhaust and reedblock..Still very satisfied with it's performance and still running strong.

So, I won QOTM for June this year and have been wanting to upgrade the carb on my 350 from the 38mm A/S carb to a 41.2 PWK. I asked Eddie if we could bore my carb with my winnings and he advised against it due to the air vanes in the Airstryker carb making boring that carb pretty difficult. So, he offered to trade me a brand new PWK 41.2 for my excellent condition 38mm A/S!

There was some delay (totally understandable given his workload and I am certainly not going to get pushy with a man who does so much for us and then still sponsors our QOTM contest) But in the end, I got the carb I ultimately wanted for my big bore and on top of that he threw in one of his WORKS (note spelling! LOL!) Carb/jet wrenches with an assortment of jets! I did not ask for any extras. He already went above and beyond as far as I am concerned.. But that tells you the kind of guy he is. He didn't have to thrown in that nice little extra goodie, but he did anyway.

Eddie, I would love to see you start to participate here on our board at some point even if you just swing in and check out threads like this. Without ESR and a few others like him, where would we all be??

Thanks ESR!.....

One happy looney ATCer! :tongue-new:
