Clutch Problems

I ran my quad for the first time afew weeks ago.It ran great, but at the end of the day my clutch started slipping.I have the maguara hydro clutch that worked great as well.I decided to do the neils upgrade clutch. The problem i have is because of the 400ex thicker plate the rod has to move further to engage the pressure plate so i doubled the washer behind the needle bearing but was concerned that it might not allow the clutch pack to fully seat when the clutch was let out.so i ground the extra washer down to the point to where i had the slightest movement in the rod before it started to engage the pressure plate.I get it all back together, fire it up and it dies. The only i could do is to adjust the lever far enough out to where when id put it in gear it wouldnt die,but the lever is to far out for my liking. Is it still an uprade without the 400ex plate? Will i still have better clamping force with the cr500 springs and drain bolt washers than stock? The other thing i noticed when id pull in the clutch, the pressure plate would not come out flush,it would come off the pack kind of **** eyed.Is that normal?Like i said, the hydro clutch worked great prior to doing the upgrade, but idid come across a post from Neil saying that you did have to adjust the cale abit to get it to work with cable style clutch lever.Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Is your clutch new?
Are all the plates/disc's in spec?
Is the basket notched at all?
Are the plate surfaces on the hub and pressure plate grooved at all?

The fibers and steele plates are new oem.As well as the cr 500 spring. There are no notches in basket, and didnt notice any grooves. What i did notice when i took it apart, whoever put it together last, put the hat on the rod, then the washer, then the needle bearing. So basically was mated directly against the pressure plate. It still looked alright though.By the way,its the 89 upgrade set up.

If it is not to much off a pain in the butt I think I would set it back up stock and then see if you get the same results. Or at least without the 400ex plate and the second washer at the needle bearing. Smear a little grease or whatever on the gasket so you don't risk tearing it every time you pull the cover.

That's what I would do but I certainly am not the most knowledgeable R person here
