Anybody know much about the mechanical seal? My buddy recently installed a new Esr quick change cover and water had slow drip from weep hole. After starting the bike the drip become excessive! We discovered that he was missing the washer that goes between the seal and the impeller #11 on the oem diagram. Is this part significant enough to make a seal leak or not?? He has the washer on order and new mech seal but we would like to know if the washer alone should fix it before he rips a already new seal out. Does the washer help create a seal when the impeller is tightened down so that coolant can't leak from the center of the seal where the shaft comes through?

I just rebuilt my water pump not too long ago. Not sure if the missing washer is exactly the cause of your problem. But definitely wouldn't be surprised if it was.

Only way to find out is to assemble it and see if it fixes it.

That is the plan just waiting on the part from honda. Hopfully it's the fix if not then well be replacing the seal which isn't a big deal just would rather not of not needed.

Putting the washer in only puts the impeller a 1/16 of an inch out. The mechanical seal will not be pushing as hard on the porcelain mounted in the impeller. Be sure to put a dab of petroleum jelly on the porcelain and mechanical seal. It might be you had a little dirt in there and it was not sealing correctly.
