Educate me on new styles of pipes
« on: July 09, 2014, 11:54:06 AM »
I built my 250r a long time ago, when Yukon gears and OEM cranks were still available.  Things have changed since then.

This isn't a "wut pipe is best" thread, but just an EDUCATION of different pipes now available.

I've got two motors I need to discuss.  I'm thinking a TRX5 centermount pipe for my 340PV, I'm not too happy with this Duncan Eliminator pipe.  But last time I was looking, there was only one style of TRX5 available, now I see talk about a 5 or a 5b.  What's the difference, and the target of each style?

I've also got a dismantled ESR 310 on a shelf I'm gonna start assembling, with TRX9 porting.  So same question on the pipe, because I could swear I saw a 9, a 9r, and a 9b.  What is the difference?

I'm not knocking Eddie, he's done wonderful things for our machines, but his website used to be really informative, now it's just a catalog list of parts with little information (unless I'm looking in the wrong spot).  I'm just expected to "know" the difference in styles and parts.  I know he's busy, so I don't want to bug him with these questions.

The "b" stands for a larger diameter head pipe. It's supposed to help big bores run a little cooler. The 9 has a sharper hit than the 5 due to a steeper converging cone. I don't know what the "r" stands for (a revision maybe)? I would consider a "b" for the 340 though.

I'm running a trx9. I believe it is the ESR equivalent of a PT high rev. It is much bigger in diameter though. It seems to pull good down low but that might be because its pushing a 412 cc motor. I did modify the stinger to big bore 1.125 ID

I can imagine a 412cc would indeed need a larger stinger. I don't need to do anything crazy, I just want to know all my options.

Cripes, have I been out of the game too long?  I don't even know what pipes are available to me.  I need to start building more 250Rs and less Polaris Scramblers...

Wilkin are you on the gen3usa forum? My buddy is pretty big on them. I think harobykes is his screen name.

No gen3usa, I only mentioned Polaris Scrambler because I have one in my garage I'm fixing for a friend.  Before that was a Yamaha Grizzly 600 (how it even ran with that carb at all I'll never know.  It was actually missing the idle mixture screw completely).  None of those were performance builds, strictly a get-it-running build.
