fixing stud found some other issue
« on: July 22, 2014, 03:19:45 AM »
So after the stud broke on the silver lake trip at the cylinder base. I tore it apart tonight after work and replaced the front 2 studs so far. (I have to order more to replace all and give 2 back to who gave me 2). I found that my piston has some deep grooves in it but no marks on the cylinder walls themselves. I will post pics when I get up.
Just glad the stud broke and I pulled it apart and caught this early enough. Gonna order a new piston and have the cylinder looked at as well. Just a little stumped as to why and how come no marks on cylinder wall. Maybe some of you all can chime in and help me out some.

Maybe some it sucked up some banshee parts. Chunks of ring flaking off? Reeds?

Why would the studs break? Who built the motor?  Not trying to start anything, but im seriously curious.

The piston is made of aluminum. It is only 1/3 as strong as steel. Which means it scars much more easily than the cylinder wall. Check your dome for any pitting. If there are pits on the dome your rod bearing or wrist pin bearing may be starting to let go.

No pitting in the dome, looks as new as I put it in Tony.
Kyle the cylinder came from CT and then ported by jms who was Mike larocco's engine builder and team Honda 125's engine builder too. The stud was old oem for the cases. I am putting in the longer one's for the 310 now.

OK got it figured out. Called the engine man. It ran just a little lean, most likely at the dunes and pry when the stud broke, and it suckered someair.

I am going $8 a set. Shipping is $3 or $6 depending on the time frame. I just got them so they could be ordered with a spacer plate.

Wouldn't hurt to make sure the mating surfaces are flat before reassembly.

Exactly bud, I'm gonna check all of them. And I have a new spare spacer plate as well. I'm gonna make sure it's the same thickness as well. Done these top ends many times
