Smart Carb or Lectron?
« on: November 23, 2015, 07:17:54 PM »
I was thinking about getting one or the other of these carbs.  Which one would you recommend and why?  My quad is an 86 with long rod, spacer plate, FMF pipe, aftermarket reeds.  Currently running a 38mm pwk a/s.   I like the looks of the smart carb but have heard there is a substantial wait for the cast.  Is it that much better than the lectron?   I am tired of jetting

Seth I ran a smart carb on a 363 sphinx and they still take some tuning but the screw adjuster up top is nice compared to the Lectron where you have to pull the slide out of the carb body to adjust. Are you having issues jetting or just sick of switching jets?

Just sick of jetting.  I mainly trail ride and I just would like to have something reliable I could just get on and go.  I live at about 2000 ft. Elevation and I ride anywhere from sea level to 4000-5000 ft.

If you're dead set on something that supposedly adjusts to altitude which I can't say for sure since I've only gone from 1000 Ft to sea level on the coast you might have to spend the coin for the billet the cast runs are always pushed way back. Lectrons you may need different rods or adjust the ones that's in there some.

What are the differences n the cast and billet?  Any advantages other than looks?

I'm happy with my 40mm billet smartcarb. The cast one has a little shorter throat length and may fit in easier. All of them need a different box to carb boot to unshroud the manifold pressure sensing port in the mouth of the carb ( thanks to Rablack for learning that). The R motors seem to like a richer metering rod than what they put on dirtbikes.

Seth,
I would go with the SmartCarb. As Skeans mentioned, the smart carb is going to automatically adjust for altitude and temperature where the Lectron does not. With you having a stock bore motor, the 38 smartcarb should be almost perfect right out of the box. It may require some minor low speed tuning (off-idle to 1/4 throttle), but that is done externally by a clicker knob on top of the carb (much easier that pulling jets and needles).

There is no difference in performance between the billet and the cast models, basically just cost difference. Although the cast models seem to generally involve a wait time. So if you are not a patient person, ordering a cast may not be right for you. lol.

As rk88r kinda mentioned, make sure you give them the actual application you are using it for, type of engine, mods, style of riding, etc.

Thanks for the input guys.  My motor is mostly stock.  It is bored .040 over but I know that is way closer to stock than a 310 or 330.  Prob just order the smart carb and wait.

If you do order a cast a guy here named Hickwheeler ordered one ad got the run a round for well over a month that it was only another week out so their eta times suck for the cast, I maybe selling a billet 40 and the rods.
