Turning crank

Hi everyone. I just did a rebuild on my 86 lower end. I was woundering if there is suppose to be any resistance when u turn the crank with the rod I notice if I stop at bottom dead center it is hard to get turning again. I can turn the crank with the water pump by hand so I am not sure if the resistance I feel is ok. Also with everything on but the top end and stator cover if I spin the flywheel by hand and let it go it turns about 1/4 turn then stops and it will keep doing that is that normal I thought it was the weight from the counterbalance causing that is that the correct train of thought or is there a possible issue. Sorry so many questions in one post just wanted to ask while I can remember what I needed to know. Thanks for your time have a great weekend.

If the engine is together, like counter balancer & clutch all in place, yes there should be quite a bit of resistance to turn the crank over, because your having to move all those rotating parts.
Now if just the crank is installed, nothing mounted on the clutch side of the engine, it should rotate free, unless the crank is under a bind.
What crank do you have, OEM Honda or Hot Rods, because it does make a difference.

I but in a oem nos crank 86 short rod and yes everything is on. Is it because of the balancer that if u spin the flywheel by hand then let it go it goes a 1/4 turn then stops

Just a wild guess but is the rod hitting the center case gasket by chance at BDC? I had this happen before and it seemed weird. The center case gasket was interfering with the rod. Not a problem whatsoever if it is.

had similar thing happen i got a little carried away with the hondabond at the bottom of case once and it left a big lump that the crank was hitting when you turned it stupid me pulled it back apart without thinking to look down thru webs with light and ende up waitng for a week on another center gasket.

If your holding the rod in your hand, to keep it from slapping around into the cases & trying to spin the crank over by hand, with everything in place, yes & you would be mighty lucky if it would spin as far as a 1/4" & stop.
Theres lots of things keeping the crank from just spinning freely, with everything in place on the engine. Drag from the seals rubbing, drag from all the other things those two crank gears have got to rotate, like the balancer, clutch basket & the main transmission shaft, gears on both shafts & if the clutch cover is in place, a water pump shaft to rotate as well with two seals in it dragging.
