Sputtering Problem (not the carburetor)
« on: September 01, 2013, 08:48:15 PM »
I've got an occasional sputtering problem and I'm pretty sure it is not the carburetor.  I think the jetting is spot-on or near spot-on but it occasionally sputters like it is too rich, especially if I'm out of the power band or not in the ideal gear.  I've checked the spark plug and it looks fine.  It almost seems like a problem with the ignition but I'm not sure where it originates, i.e., the coil, CDI, etc.  Any advice is appreciated.

Try another cdi box if ya got me. Check all connections for corrosion and that there tight. Check grounds make sure there tight and look for frayed or melted wires and make sure gas cap hose is no blocked

No, I think the carburetor is fine.  I'm leaning towards an electrical problem.  I'll go through all the connections and see if that works.

If its a corroded connection it  can be cleaned up. You cannot test the CDI but you can check the resistance of the stator with  an ohm meter to see if its within tolerance. You mat be not getting a hot enough spark. The plug may look OK but make sure your plug gap is correct.
