Forgive my newbie ass, but can someone explain the benefits of the cr250 ignition upgrade? And what exactly is needed?
That is a pretty simple explain, if you got hair on your head & if your using the stock OEM TRX250R ignition system, by the time you get fed up trying to make it work right, you may not have to much hair left to pull out :character0029::chuncky:.
The stock OEM 250R ignition system can be problematic, with things like, you'll go out to ride & have no spark, when just the other day it was working fine, so now you cant get the engine started. If its like everybody elses, you may be riding one day & stop to take a little break, jump back on & the engine wont start. If that should happen, your really in a pickle if it does.
Quite a few years ago, was a guy on Mac Dizzy. Com, took it on himself to find out the reason the old OEM TRX250R ignition was so problematic.
Things he found were, old & weak ignition stator for one & then the connectors in the wiring harness. Those connectors may look good, but chances are they are not making good contact with each other, so in turn will affect the operation of the system.
Next, was the CDI box. He took it completely apart, which was a major task just in itself from being filled with epoxy, so it was a long process digging into it just to pick out the main board.
One thing he found, was the male pin in the CDI box where the harness makes connection with the box, that the black wire with white stripe in the harness connects to, it will become loose from the main board, break connection with the board & will sometimes have connection & then at times will not.
That is where the hair pulling comes into play & I've dealt with it myself first hand. I've had times, all it took was just bend the harness around some close to the connection at the box & the ignition would start back sparking. Then times that didnt work & just a simple spraying of some WD40 onto the flywheel & stator would start it back to sparking. I have heard of guys taking a small C clamp & placing it right in the middle of the CDI box & tighting it up some & the ignition would go back to sparking.
Got to where it would happen more often & then one day, I had a CR250R conversion & OH MY GOD did life change.
NO more ignition problems after that, but the only thing about it, the CR250R flywheel is so much smaller than the TRX flywheel, that the engine will rev up faster & as well will slow down faster & will take a bit of getting youst to when riding.
By the flywheel being smaller & the engine reving up faster, it will kind of make it feel like the engine has had some performance work done to it, even if it is a stock engine.
Having the CR250R ignition system conversion on a TRX250R, will make life so much easier & will at the same time, make you think a whole lot more of your old 250R quad, the best sport & racing quad ever built.
