I've got a question that I've been reading a variety of answers to. What sealant to use on a gas tank?

I've designed a fuel tank recently and I want to build it out of steel. Why steel? Fiberglass will absorb slowly and also needs to be thick for this design. Weight becomes an issue at this point. Aluminum, although light and not needing sealant, I can't weld aluminum and the factor of possible weakening tank mounts. Steel is heavier and rusts but easier to work with. It's not much heavier in this application though.

My plans once it is all welded up and pressure tested is to have the outside powder coated to my liking. After that I will seal it. I've been reading a lot of good things on por-15's gas tank sealant kit. Has anyone used their tank kit? Any issues with a fuel/oil mix? Any other testimonials on other products?

I have had great luck with Red Kote tank sealer, I used it on my 68 Camaro's gas tank 25 years ago and it has yet to flake off. I also use it to sealover any epoxy I use inside my 2 stroke motors and I have yet to have any problems even running methanol

^^^ same recommendation. I'm about to do my lil 70 tank and of all the searching to find the best the Red-Kote seemed like its the best. I hopefully will get around to doing it soon. I bough on eBay for 25$ shipped from the red-kote dealer.

That sounds good. I was reading about red-kote.

But right now I'm saying forget the tank and I'll take the camaro! I had a 69 when I was 20 and my ex decided to sell it when I went to basic training. 68 rs/ss is the model of my choice. Such a sexy car.

Anyways, back to topic. I'll have to look into pricing but I'll need to get this tank built first. Thanks for the input.

http://www.caswellplating.com sells a 2 part epoxy tank sealer that works well.

Thanks fire. The four sealants that I've read about were por-15, red-kote, caswell and creem.

Definitely want something that won't start flaking or peeling. I know the prep and patience are key here and no corners will be cut.

As of now I'm debating on buying bend tech sheet metal to compliment my bend tech pro so I can make this thing happen. Part of me is saying just go with what I have. I'm confident in my measurements and know what needs to be tweaked so I can get this done. Just trying to decide when I want to tackle this. Thinking after I get this pit bike taken care of.
