Wanted 50cc quad
« on: January 13, 2014, 09:48:32 PM »
Been looking for awhile.  My 6 yr needs a 50 quad. Must be 2 stroke and cvt (auto). Would prefer kfx or other green ones ( fav color) but open to others.   Totally stock would be best. Hopefully $800  maybe a grand., accounting that I will spend a few hundred to get it shipped to houston tx and he will outgrow in a year or two.  Open to all manufacturers, except Chinese   Let me know if you know where I should be looking.
Thanks!

Really? A 50 for a 6yo? Like you said he will out grow it within a year. I just got my son a LT80. It is a 2 stroke and CVT. He is a 3.5yo. I just put a longer bolt in the throttle stop so he can only go at a walking pace right now. This way he can ride it for a couple of years then we'll upgrade.

Some of the 50's are really small (Suzuki for example). My 7yr old had a DS50, which uses the same chassis as the 90's, and honestly that 50 is pretty peppy!. My son is a short guy so he has been able to grow into it, and should be able to get atleast another year out of it with some mods. We have beat on that quad for 2 yrs and its held up great! Our next step will be a 90 though, as we pass the 50 down to our youngest. Our daughter ran a Hetrick build Kaesa 90, man that thing was wicked!!. As Rupp said, you can never go wrong with an Lt80, pure classic. Whatever you do, dont buy Chinese, they will only waste your time and money. Take the little guy around to some dealerships, let him and you get a feel for the sizes of different quads, as theres alot of variences.

well I test drove an LT80 yesterday with an FMF pipe and it just seemed like way too much power.  it was just about pulling wheelies when it hit on the power band.  I weigh 260 pounds, I can only imagine how powerful it would be with a 45 pound kid on there.  and if you try putting around it was fouling the plug, so it didnt seem like using the throttle stop would be a viable option.  Im pretty much at a loss for what to do.  maybe a stock one wont be so peppy

The one I have has all the usual LT80 mods, aftermarket carb, pipe(actually I just put a stock one on to quiet it down so he can ride around at the house) no air box, yada yada yada.  With the throttle stop out and me riding it, yup, it can get the front end off the ground.

Set the carb up right and he can put around all day. My son has gone through 2 tanks of gas since he got it on Christmas and hasn't fouled a plug yet. I also only run pre-mix.

lt80's are great. On the 50's don't get the new dog 4 stroke as they are nothing like the 2 stroke 50. Same with the current smog law 4 stroke 90's being a shadow of the 2 stroke. You are limited for sure and the tiawan offerings are ok. I have had both a kymco 90 4 stroke for my daughter and a polaris 90 2 stroke for my son. Both were made in tiawan and not at all junk. The tiawan and better drr apex type china quads have used simular chassis that have some common parts. I had extended aarms that can be found used for 100-150 and just the lug extenders on the back. They were very stable and a much safer less tippy setup then an lt80 imo.
