KB81 WFO Promotions Geneseo National Harescramble Race Report
« on: October 13, 2014, 07:30:34 AM »
Well heres a video and a little race report from this weekends National Harescramble.  I ditched the Smart Carb for this race about 3 hours before the start. I wasn't confident in the WOT for it just because race temps can get so high.  Cory with APT is sending me another richer FMR to correct this issue.  So i had all of an hour of jetting time on my 38mm A/S and it was only 50 degrees out.  I got it pretty close and was slightly rich at WOT as you can hear in the video on the long straights, otherwise the bike ran great.  I entered the A class which had 7 guys in it i think, a lot of them call it the Pro class, I don't consider it that, but hey, what ever works.

I always try to take it easy on the first lap of a harescramble because you dont know the track layout, and its tuff to go as fast as you can not knowing which why your going to go next. This video is only the first two laps.  I may post another video of my last lap to show the speed that can be had when you know the track layout if theres enough interest. Im not sure how many people actually watch harescramble videos.

Race Report
Im not sure how you classify the holeshot, i was probably technically 4th, but ended up second out of the start of the race.  It doesn't take me long to pass for first place and almost equally as quickly throw it away when I get hooked on a tree.  I end up dropping back to 7th place due to the tree incident that takes me  what seems like an eternity to get off the tree. I manage to pass my way back to first place within the next lap or so, but then get hooked by a vine in the middle of the path and have to untangle myself.  This incident puts me back to 5th place.  I manage to catch back up several times in the race, but I kept having small hang ups that kept me from getting to the front again.

Ultimately I DNF the race when a tie rod nut comes off and i loose control of my left front.  It was impossible to continue racing when you cant steer.  You will notice how tight the trails are back in the woods.

All and all Im very happy with the race.  I proved i could run up front, and that I had the speed to stay up there if it wasn't for some issues.  I plan on racing even more harescrambles next year and maybe even some GNCC events.  One of the things im going to get next year is a AutoClutch for sure.  This feature alone is worth a lot of time and speed in the trails.

ALSO!!! hang in there, the video does get some mud on it, but i clean it off so you can see after a few minutes of riding.

Nice vid! I actually like it starting out behind someone when entering the woods. Gives you a chance to settle in and find the pace of the group and yourself. That sucks about the smart carb. Hopefully you get it dialed in soon.

how are these races set up? Do you just stop for fuel as needed and get back at it asap and how many laps do you run? I had to jump past the mud on the screen but after that the first video was good.

Its a timed race.  so say its a 2 hour race, you put in as many laps as you can, most laps wins. If your on the same lap its who ever finishes first.   I had a fuel can on the side right after the check point that i was going to use if i hit reserve and still had more than 1 lap to go. I know i can go 1.5 hours on 3.6 gallons, but i dont know about 2, never tried.  These 363's are thirsty.

Cool video, Kyle. Sounds like you are getting the hang of it. I know it is frustrating when you have little hang ups that keep getting in the way. I think you will have a dang good race when it all falls into place.

Thats all part of racing harescrambles.  Oh i deff i have a good feel for it.  Harescrambling is a lot easier than MX IMHO.  Its not nearly as physically demanding.  But its a lot of fun and challenging.   Its hard on equipment for sure.

That's interesting. Usually it's the other way around for most MX guys. I know a few MX pros haven't fared very well when they go try a few GNCC's

Weinen is racing the Ironman so that should be very interesting

I bet Weinen does really well.   Hes a great rider, and has been practicing with Borich for awhile.   Where and when is the Ironman?

I have had almost no issues making the transition.  Granted my races have all been local amateur stuff (no matter what they choose to call it)  not GNCC series.  I jumped into A class with a not well setup bike and won one and got second in another with no practice.  I have deff progressed and my bike is better now than it was then.  I can see myself trying a few of the closer GNCC's next year.

By no means do i mean to say its easy.  I just have done relatively well with not a lot of time at it doing harescrambles i feel.  I have worked hard to be mid pack at the nationals in A class MX.  Thats just my take on it.  Hopefully Im able to put it all together and actually win one again.  Im confident i will.  Maybe even yet this year, there are a couple left.  Now ..... I need to put cotter keys back in my bike so i dont have these loose bolt issues. LOL

Ironman is the last GNCC of the year in Crawfordsville IN, it's this coming weekend. I'm guessing Weinen somewhere between #10 & #20, Thomas Brown ran it a few years back and lead for a short while but then fell off. The woods gets quite rough in a GNCC and I think that is just something that takes experience riding on to be able to run up front even for highly skilled riders.

Kyle it is at the same place they added the IN round for national motocross this year if that helps any, business that is there is called Toms Marine guessing that would give you an exact location if that is what you are searching for.
