i was thinking while i was building another ar15 using a melonite/ salt bath nitrocarbonized barrel. could this metal treatment be used on our 250r cylinders to extend life and durability? from what i have seen with its use in gun barrels it is an actual metal treatment not a coating so once a cylinder was ported and chamfered then treated it would be pretty much impervious to any type of damage from pistons and maybe even rings. i have seen ar15 barrels totally shot out that were chrome lined with only 8000-10000 rds but i personally have a melonite treated upper that has between 18000-20000 rds that shows little to no wear in the lands and grooves or in the headspace. Has anyone heard of any engine builders using this type of treatment on engnes? mainly just thinking out loud but from what ive seen and read it could have potential
