I know this doesn't do a lot for me without pictures, but bear with me. I have an original Hinson quick change. It has the polished plate and has the typical kick starter rash that a lot of them were plagued by. I know that CT has started reproducing the covers and the plates, but the waiting list to get one is like trying to get a new heart or kidney. That and I would like to keep my Hinson one if all possible. Does anyone think it would be possible to "lightly" weld up the scratches in it, machine/sand down whats on top, then go back into the letters and engrave them again with a dremel. I say lightly, meaning not pour the heat to it to avoid warping the plate.

CT is making a lot of these and offer both the CT Racing AND Hinson Racing quick change cover plates.  You'll need to buy a full cover to get a the quickchange plate OR ask Roxanne to put you on a list for just the quickchange cover (which last I heard, she was doing in the coming months).  So - not too hard to get if you ask me.  In the last month, I've bought a 2 BNIB cover plates (one black, one red) and a polished side cover quick change from CT.

Sure you could weld and sand it down. It's going to take awhile and lots of patients. Good luck. Show us your progress

I kinda just figured tig it up and sand it back down. I plan on powdercoating it blue anyways, then highlighting the letters with silver.

I thought they just offered the clear & colored ones for ESR quick change covers.  Do they offer then for the traditional Hinson/CT/Duncan/Rath/T&T/etc.?

It's aluminum, right?  I'd probably recommend BRAZING over welding.

Brazing is typically done with a torch, not an arc, and generally done at much lower heat.  And because you don't use an arc, you don't eat into the base material, so there's no risk of any blow-through.

since its thin aluminum plate, it will likely warp.  you would need a heat sink of some sort to mitigate the warping; and even then it isn't fullproof.

but, if you decide to weld, you will need it stress relieved.  stress relieving should allow it to go back to flat...  and again, it takes an experienced individual to do this correctly.  the properties of the aluminum will have a baring on the stress relieving procedure.  i.e. 6061; 6061 T?; 7075; 3003 and etc.  the T (tempering) will be an important factor here.

I scored another Hinson cover thanks to havinnoj. Im gonna keep the scratched one for a spare, Ive heard jb weld can be used as a filler for powder coat. I may try building it up, and then sanding it down and powder coating the whole piece.
