How would you fix these
« on: May 26, 2020, 11:27:46 PM »
On my banshee I need to either polish or get my pipes replated and would like to try to polish them before I either buy new ones or get them redone. The top big part is polishing fine but the bottom where most pipes are rusted I cant get off and also in the middle the chrome is peeling in little spots all over it. I think they're toomie t3's but I might be wrong they're not stamped

No way to save those pitted areas. You can see about replating them but many platers will not plate used pipes because they will contaminate their tanks. You can try ceramic coating them. I would just buff out what you can and call it a day. Aren't you fixing this up to flip? Can't make money if your dumpings money into it.

agreed but now there is talk of selling it to my sister or my dad and then i would still probably make these pipes look good. they would fit in my powder coat oven if anyone knows how hot a pipe can get because normal powder starts having issues at 250F. but i always thought powder coated pipes looks kinda dumb. i will ask around about ceramic coating them. but i was looking and  there not T3's they are 2's or 1's which is kinda cool

Have you considered blasting them and just spraying them with a hi heat matte paint.?i can tell you from my experience pricing out ceracoating small dirtbike parts doing a set of pipes wouldn’t be cost effective.it would probably run you a couple of hundred bucks plus your travel time to and from who’s ever doing it twice.

Another option for the lower roached out areas would be pipe wrap like racers use on headers..just a thought

You can also blast them and retouch the welds and leave them raw metal just be sure to keep them oiled up after every ride and cleaning..I use olive oil on mine..

Like Action69 said, hi-temp paint & done. My old PT hi-rev was painted black & I always liked that look personally. I glass beaded it & sprayed it black again over the winter with rustoleum bbq black. Going to be doing another pipe for croat1's 86 the same way here soon. I'll be using VHT hi-temp header black paint on his pipe though.

I don't know of any powder coating that would last on an exhaust pipe. I personally like the look of raw pipes. You might be able to find a plater that will strip the old plating off for you. As Hawaii mentioned, most platers will not want to replate them.

Removing chrome and nickel by grinding is a real chore. It would be worth a few phone calls to see if a plating shop would electro-strip them for you.

For those of you who have painted pipes, did you media blast them and paint over the old chrome?

The PT hi-rev that I painted was raw steel when I got it so I painted it black. The pipe I will be repainting soon is also already painted black so it will be glass beaded before being repainted.

I have bead blasted a chrome axle so it could be powder coated,  but never blasted a pipe.  The axle took a long time to get all the chrome off. So plating will come off if you are willing to work at it.

today i am going to a Huge banshee parts lot so if he has super cheap pipes (anything other than stock) and if not then i will have them stripped or i will bead blast and do a raw look. i also took a closer look and they were ceramic coated before so the coating thats on them is a ceramic coating. also i am fairly sure either im selling it to my dad or sister so i want it to be all good and not cheap out on much cause im going to have to deal with the complaining of it not being great. i will anyhow but i dont want the complaining to be more than it has to be. lol
