My First R Build (Aren Roll Walsh 88 Motor)
« on: July 14, 2013, 01:27:19 AM »
Figured I'd post (if this works) where I'm at with my first R build.  Learning a lot about Ebay, shady sellers, etc....None the less, I'm enjoying this.  My goal is to get this together, run it, and then break it down again this winter and add some fresh powder and tlc.  I wish Fullbore was still in business.  So far so good - Arens frame, Roll +3, Walsh swinger, Axis LT up front, YFZ brakes, LSR stem, OEM plastic, OEM airbox, and a 88 engine.  I'll be leaning on you all to help me get the linkage right because I'm not sure what my setup is at the moment.  Should be 89 std but the swinger is built like a 86/7.  I'll tried to post a close up of what I got going on at the pivot point.  The Arens does not have lower engine mounts so I use half the OEM bracket for the lower engine mounts and use the Arens for the top engine mount.  Maybe someone can help pin down what style Arens I got.  Enough for now....

Ah so that's where that frame went... Lol saw it for sale months ago on craigslist.  Nice find and definitely a good place to start.

We need some more pictures of the swingarm its self to be able to help you with that.  With the Arens frame though you generally only have the lower rear motor mount which is all you need back there.

With the R motors all you really need to use motor mount wise is:  Front, bottom, and rear (either upper or lower).  Bolting the cylinder to the headstay is arguable and there are different fields of thought on that.  Just be sure to run the headstay to keep the frame true and from flexing.

Anyway keep up the good work and I look forward to watching the build

Interesting, my Arens has the rear engine mount tabs on the bottom of the frame but not the upper/lateral bar like yours has. John must have changed the design somewhere along the way.

Putting good parts back to work.  Some came from you all.  I'll get some better pictures of the swing arm with some measurements.  This R thing is a little addictive and I do sort of have three builds going on at once but that's the result of cutting my teeth on Ebay :).  Thanks again.

The guy I bought this from mentioned that this particular frame came from a XC guy who was sponsored by Arens.  I didn't know if that was valid or not but he did drop his name.  I wish I would have written it down.  Your comment about the rear mount setup is exactly why I'm curious.  Most Arens I see have bottom rear motor mounts not top.  If someone modified this, they are as talented as the original frame builders because every weld on this frame is flawless and looks identical.

My apologies, I checked my Arens and that uses the lower rear motor mount as well, no upper rear motor mount

Need a carb....what do you all recomend?  The engine is not a big bore but has a trinity stage 4 port etc according the seller.  I'm thinking a 38 but not really set on anything.  Most the riding will be on pipelines in old strip mines.  Just curious if any carbs from a newer bike would work.  My 06 yz250 is sitting next the quad and giving me potentially foolish ideas like trying the carb.  Any chance the bike would stay together with that engine in there....maybe another project or not as you guys would already be doing it if worked.  Curious on the carb recomendations.

Not a big bore, but what are you doing with the motor?  Probably wouldn't want more than a 38 air stryker

Well this is how it turned out more or less.  I've since disassembled and will be using a bunch of the parts for a new XC build.

Maybe in a few weeks.  I ordered a cover from Fourwerx and plan to use that pan.  The seat in the picture isn't exactly a true Red in that it's like a shade lighter and towards orange....IMO.
