I assume you are using the 89 update kit. The sling shot came with an extra washer that goes behind the pancake bearing at the end of the pushrod to help the opposite of this problem. If you have this extra washer in you can take it out. I usaully go through the 10 pushrods I have and choose the longest one. Or add a thicker washer.  If you have a longer pushrod I can send you a shorter one. Do you have any way to measure it with a dial caliper?

Only take .030" off at a time. if you go to far then you can put in the washer back in as a shim.

If you can measure it you have someplace to start from. I can send you a shorter one as I have many. If you happen to sand it too short you can use the shim to obtain the correct length. To work on the sling shot is a pain because you have to turn the quad on its side. The handlebar on a step stool works good. Before you put the springs back on you want to do a test pull on the clutch to determine if you have enough or not enough pull and adjust from there.

Did you have any play in the clutch lever?  I always keep a little.  If the rod was too long you will not have any play no matter how you adjust it.  When you put it back together put it in gear and see if you can turn the basket by hand.  That way you know if it is tensioned up tight or not.

Also something to check that I had a problem with.  The billet outer plate that holds the balls was bottoming out on the big nut that tightens the inner clutch hub down.  When you pull it apart you would be able to see some indentions in the billet plate from tightening down on the nut.  The nut will start shaving some aluminum off the plate.  It was very easy to fix just ground a little down on the nut and also clearance the inside of the plate.
