Got down to the nitty gritty this weekend and started tearing down the motor. I found a few nice surprises for one which is always nice. Has a Hinson clutch basket in great shape as well as the Nikasil plating on the jug which is in excellent shape.

Should be getting a package from Dirt Fiend Racing next week with. CP piston and a Hot Rods crank. I'll also be tearing the valve train apart to see if everything is in spec....I'm almost willing to just pull the trigger on at least a new SS intake valve kit...probably Kibblewhites...not sure though.

the valve train currently has dual stage springs, is that the OEM setup with the Ti valves?

Had a Pro X piston in it...wrist pin looked like it was still in great shape.

About it to split the cases.....didn't know about the "special" counter balancer lock nut socket I will end up needing haha

Lookin good making good progress man! Pretty sure factory doesn't come with dual springs...yea you might as well go ahead and update the valve train...that's one of the first things that starts to wear on on the motor..also make sure the timing chain hasn't stretched to much!

Thanks for the compliment man! Yeah I figured OEM wasn't a dual spring set-up after looking at some micro fiche diags. It's mind numbing how quick stuff starts to add up, first it was pulling the trigger on a new crank, now a new valve train..just seems one thing leads to another...like port work.....but I'll put that on the back burner for now haha...Should be a strong running motor though once its all put together.

I have a new OEM timing chain going in for sure...I figured might as well since everything else is being replaced.

Does anyone have an opinion on what valves to go with as far as SS? I'm thinking either Kibblewhites or Ferreas....

Calling other Laeger/CRF guys....I need a little bit of help and possibly pics of your pet cock set-ups please...

when I got this bike, it had a cheapo inline plastic valve the didn't mount on anything and basically flopped around between the tank and the carb. I'm looking to do it right with the proper pet cock, but the space between the valve cover and the gas tank is limited. The only piece coming out of the gas tank is a 90deg brass fitting the faces towards the front of the gas tank...any help would be appreciated...thanks!!!

My Houser has the same 90 degree and uses what I think is a stock crf shutoff. I just stuck the blue hose on there to show wher it goes through,I run a fuel filter just before the bracket. It is a tight fit to bolt the valve to the frame but there about a half inch between the nut and the valve cover. Dan is cooler then us "non-injected guys"..LOL

I don't have a petcock, mine has a fuel pump welded to the tank. :wink-new:

Try a pingle, it should mount directly to the tank.

What a tease Dan haha...

I don't thin I can fit a pet cock that mounts directly to the tank as I have VERY limited space. I'll have to look at the Pingles though and see if it'd work.

Hell yeah! Thanks for the pics man...I think this is the route I may go. A buddy of mine that has a '03 Walsh/YZ450 has that same pet cock and it fits nicrly on the side of the frame. Really appreciate the pics!!!

Well, I discovered another nice surprise today while I tore the valve train down. Not only are the springs in great condition, but this thing already has Black Diamond KPMI's in it! They still have plenty of shoulder left and a nice tight seal with the valve seats. I used a thin gauge Forney cone wire head on my Makita and cleaned out the valve dome and ports. After 2 cans of brake clean and plenty of scrubbing, man I wish I could send this thing off for some nice port work lol...

I live down the street from Racer's Edge who did a fantastic job on a YFZ head for me, but I'm just not quite sure who I'd send this CRF head too...probably lean towards Sparks or Baldwin, but that's another project down the road.

I made my own little valve retainer remover from a 17mm Chinese socket and a BF C-clamp haha...

Very nice suprise! Baldwin,Dasa and  Rage are hot right now,my buddies 501 Baldwin Trx make ungodly amounts of power. Another not so well know choice is Jay Riddle Racing, local to me,he can do some amazing work! But Im in the same boat as you, port work will have to wait

Funny you mention RAGE...I was researching some of Dee's work and I know he's always been one of the best out there.

DASA has always done great work as well, but the last time I remember reading and hearing is that the turn around time was stupid ridiculous unless you were high in the ranks of Racing...

try Jessie at extreme dirt works in Tennessee, I here great things about his porting the crf heads for running in trx motors as well as the crf

I need some more help fellas please.

so it appears as though I have the CRF pivot bolt and it's a PITA because it doesn't have a hex head like a typical ATV  pivot bolt. All it has as 2 flat sides which makes it a PITA to get a grip on to tighten without scraping the PC.

What other pivot bolts can I use and what pivot bearings do I need????

Now Im not sure who can answer this question but I have heard that Ltr bolts can be cut down and welded to work, which doesnt sound like a good idea. Houser uses yfz450 or Banshee swingarm bearings with wr/yz400dust caps and thrust bearings and yz 426 collars, and their own special made swingarms bolt ($85.79!!). I have the part numbers if you need them but honestly it would be a crap shoot...lol   Not sure if Chopp124 is on here on not,hes on the other sites, but you may try talking to him,I have his number if you need it. Good guy and knows quit a bit about hybrid special parts
