Well, I drive a tractor trailer for a living and I fully admit I have trucker mouth.

But, when I am dealing with my customers, I turn it off. I just don't feel it's acting in a professional manner to use profanity in business dealings. All by myself in the cab of my truck, when things make me mad, the flood gates sometimes get flung wide open.

Same thing when I am home around my kids, who are 9 and 5 years old. Yes, the milder bad language gets out in front of them. And only VERY VERY rarely in extreme situations I let a more serious word slip in front of them. Same when I'm around my Mom.

When I am conversing with people here on forums, I like to present myself in a respectful manner. It's not that I am trying to hide who I am, or hide the fact that when nobody is around I don't mind my tongue. It's just the way I was raised. Using good manners and respect goes a long way in my opinion.....

I guess in a way, I think that if we all mind our tongues in what we post, it puts out a much better image of who we are. Personally, I would rather be seen as a respectable adult, than a foul mouthed kid. And to be honest, when I see postings with alot of nonsensical swearing in it, the first thing that comes to my mind is "disrespectful kid, who doesn't deserve to be taken seriously".

Pal I swear to god I could say the same thing about me. Honestly. I'm a working class adult.  But... this is an internet forum to talk about ATVS. We're just a bunch of dudes yappin about our kwads. I respectfully suggest to the forum admin to allow people to make the choice on their own.  I personally will never ever be "dealing with customers" on this forum, so I would like to be able to speak as I see fit.  Pro-choice !

I see what you are saying.

But try this one for size...

Look at the conversation you and I, 2 people with opposite opinions on this subject are having right now. We are both making our points, and understanding each other. Nobody is using curse words. Everything is running on an even keel.

Now, being that tone, friendly sarcasm and such can sometimes be difficult enough to detect in text like this as opposed to speaking face to face, I contend it would only be worse with foul language allowed in posts. People get their tighty-whitey's in a bunch easy enough as is.

IMHO, that is a factor as well..

BUT, I have a couple possible solutions that I would think would make both sides of the argument happy...

1: If possible, each member can choose to block/censor profanity his/herself in the user control panel.

OR

2: Another site I am a member of has a subforum called "Fight Club". A member must know and punch in a password to gain access to the fight club and certify being 18 or older. I know anybody can say they are over 18, but the mods there say they can usually sniff out a kid in the fight club and boot them out of there.

What do ya think?

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I present Mr George Carlin. I warn you now, he says some very "dirty" words so don't watch this video with any children, customers or mothers in the house. If you are easily offended by certain words, don't watch the video. If you are a child, a customer or a mother, don't watch the video. Quick description of the video for those who can't watch it, Carlin explains the absurdity and beauty of language with a short story about his famous "7 dirty words" bit.  I think the video is relative to this topic.

Ok I hear ya. You're saying that if we're allowed to use certain adjectives it heats up a bad situation even faster and\or the "curse" words could trigger the wrong response because other people have bad reading compression/broken sarcasm detector. What about ever other conversation where there is no fighting. Where its just an adult using the words in conversation.  I feel you guys are thinking of the worst possible scenarios. Tell yas what I'll agree too, if some people get into a shouting match here in the future and they start using all these "offensive" words and calling each other terrible curse-word names, then let the mods censor those particular "dirty" words or stop the fight or whatever.  I would like to come here and say "my quad ran like shhiit today" without having to correct my language.  Gunna reply to the rest of your comment asap ( i like your suggestions :) )

I don't think #1 is possible. I don't think the forum software can do it. I would agree to that solution in a heartbeat, but I don't think its possible.

Solution #2. I think we should be able to speak freely in all forums and a special forum where you can say these forbidden words negates all arguments for a censored forum.

I see where you are coming from, and generally don't see much harm in the context of the example you gave. :)

In a situation where the efforts of the moderating team is to keep the kids out of the fight club, I disagree with that statement. I think most of us in favor of keeping it clean are most concerned with the example we are setting for kids.

Right. My problem, and some of you guys can confirm this, is that my history of forum comments are often long and I like to ramble on and describe stuff in detail and basically I just love to write and love talkin' about quads. I feel like I can express myself better if I'm not subjected to arbitrary and honestly IMO silly censorship.

I promise you the children will not be harmed in any way, shape or form.

I'm going to say something that might shock a few people. I want you go to your favorite search engine and search for the word "boobs".  Trust me, your kid has searched for the word boobs and if they haven't, well then they're too young to be on a internet forum :).
