Getting frustrated... need some help!
« on: September 29, 2013, 09:47:26 PM »
I bought a second 88 250r about a month ago and im thinking i know why i got it at a good price... When my brother and I went to look at it he brought an ohm meter and we checked all electricals and the coil showed bad. Not a problem since i had an extra at the house. When we got it back to my brothers house i put the good coil on and it fired right up yaaaaaa!!... the next weekend nothing, no spark same set up just sat for a week. Fast forward two weeks to this weekend. I brought it home (back to my house) and cleaned the carb out real good thinking we had spark just couldnt see it. We have seen spark but it seems very random. I got it all buttoned back up and gave her a couple kicks and yaaaaaaa!!! it fired up!! It smokes like a chimney and almost seems to be WAY TO RICH but it is 100% factory with the jets and needle. Clip is set 2nd from top. Reeds were not seated so i fliped them and they looked to be sealed after this. I went back out about 15 minutes later to check to see if the light on my plastic worked (because its fixed and all) and i kicked that stupid thing for 10 minutes... nothing. Feeling disgusted I headed inside to take a shower. About 30 minutes later I was about to go to bed and said im gonna give it one last shot. Went out to the garage and BAM!! it starts on the first kick!! I still went to bed with WTF etched into my brain. I went to load it up this morning to take it back down to my brothers for a few brake issues and it fired right up (thats two times in a row if your keeping track). Get down to my brothers about 45 minutes later and Nothing... no spark (that we can see) and thats the way it stayed for the rest of the day. We switched almost everything electrical from my good running 88 over to it with no luck. The one thing that we didnt switch was the stator we did take the cover off and my brother said that it looked like the stator cover had never been off since October 1987, looked like everything was brand new. I did take the ground wire off and roughed it up with some sand paper to make sure we had a good ground connection (this was when i bought it). Sorry for the book just want you to know what i know and see if their is something we are missing. The plug we use to check for spark is brand new, never put into the head so no contamination. Thanks!!

if you swapped every part but the stator and still no fire then the next step would be swap stators . unless my logic is off
to much power is almost enough

I am having problems with my 88 right now.  Bought it a couple years ago with no spark from my cousin.  Got it home re-did the ground by upper rad mount and it has started great ever since.  Recently put a +2 stem on it and pulled around mainly on the kill switch wires...guess what?  No spark now.  Coincedence or not?  I will find soon enough.  Already re-did the spark plug cap on the coil.  Swapped out the coil and cdi with spares..no spark.  I'm going to look at the kill switch next.  Do you have another cdi or stator to try?

check the connections real good, try installing a aftermarket or a known good factory kill switch and key switch ( or just leave them disconnected but that is not very safe so I hate to recommend it)

Couple other things I recently removed my flywheel off my 88 250r and shook it real hard and I could hear small pieces rattling around, the magnets start to break over time and when they do the ignition power out put weakens making it harder to start. I also leaned mine down to the 86 atc specs (I actually bolt a carb from a never ran 250r atc motor) They have a smaller main jet. If I remember right it is 145 and the 88 250r is a 158, it really cleaned up my bikes responsiveness. but that was run during the summer months it may need some fuel now that its cooler
Anyone looking for a great builder I highly recommend the following.
For CP products dealers I would recommend:
Arlan at LED(site sponsor), Pete Schemberger at Hybrid Engineering, Mat Shearer at Shearer Custom Pipes, Dennis Packard at Packard Racing, and Nate McCoy of McCoys Peformance.

Other great builders I also would recommend: Neil Prichard, Jerry Hall, Bubba Ramsey and James Dodge.

I took the factory kill switch off my good running 88 and put it on the issues 88. I know the kill switch is good. I have another stator i just didnt take it down to my bros this weekend. i swapped the cdi from good 88 to issues 88 with no luck. So i think the coil is ok. I will try to completely redo the ground. has anyone ever heard of a short in the ground wire?

I put the Factory kill switch from the good 88 on it, 99.9% sure the kill switch isn't the issue. The flywheel sounds like a great place to focus our efforts!! Thanks! I plan on switching from 158 to a 152 and see what that does, when i get some reliablility that is... We also plan to go through all connections and redo them as well.

You said you swapped almost everything out with no luck. The CDI is the biggest pain. It may work intermittently and cannot be tested. If you swapped it out then ????. I did have a short/break in the stator wire once just inside the ignition cover. Tested good, flip it over and nothing.....

I'm fairly certain its not the CDI as i did swap with a known working CDI. I really think there is a short somewhere. I might be in the market for a full wiring harness very soon!

Its BAAAACCCKKK!!! I don't know what is going on with this thing!! It died on my wife in the middle of the woods at Durhamtown plantation Sunday. I thought she just fouled a plug i put a new one in and nothing! It has been running great the last month or so first or second kick starts, more smoke than i would consider normal esp. when my brother got on it at his house it looked like he was fogging mosquitos.

Monday night i worked over all the connections cleaning and tightening. Took about 1/2 inch off the coil wire to make sure there was a good connection to the plug, and re seated the ground wire. Got on it and second kick fired up, i warmed it up and shut it off. The next day at lunch i got on it started it up and was about 1 minute into warm up and it died, it wouldn't start back up. Smell of gas was strong like it was flooded. I shut all the fuel off and went back to work. Yesterday morning, I jumped on it and tried to start it with 5 or 6 good kicks...nothing. The plastic was off so I started fiddling with the ground wire while trying to start it (multi-talented), i was moving the whole wire around and it fired for a few seconds and I stopped and it died. I tried it again and got some very promising hits when giggling the wire. Im thinking GROUND WIRE short. So I went and got some wire and solidered in a new splice as the ground was already tight in the factory location. Fully expecting fire when i got it done... i was disappointed with kick after kick after kick. I didn't replace the whole wire just took about 1 inch off factory wire and added about 3 inches of new wire. Im going to try and replace the whole ground wire to the point where it meets the coupler point further along in the harness. Any other ideas are more than welcome!!!

If the problem persists after replacing the ground wire then try that working CDI you have access to.
