Any opinions on a DIY powder coating systems from Eastwood? I'm thinking of doing my cases while they are apart but can purchase a kit and powders for cheaper than doing it locally... Plus I'd have leftover to play around..

Any opinions?

Thanks

I have one. Works good.  You just need a oven to bake the parts in. If you buy one get the powder off ebay or pendry powder.  You can get it by the pound and it is cheap.

From the things I read, you cannot use the same oven that food is cooked in? Damn that sucks, may be a deal breaker for me on getting one.  I dont have an extra anywhere that isnt used.

Don't do it in your home oven. You can probably go to an appilance store or even home depot and get a oven that someone traded in for a new one. I am sure they just scrap them.
The one thing to remember when you powder coat your parts is your better try out the color on some scrap first if you are unsure of the color. It is a ***** to strip off.

I have the poweder gun and am about to order some powder samples to check out the colors.

Going to have a shop do the frame but gonna see what I can fit myself. Look on craigslist for a cheapie one that works. I found one where the stove top didn't work but the oven did.

I found that my brother in law has a few of the ovens that fit in the walls.. He buys and flips houses so I figured he had some. I'm gonna pick one up this weekend and put a plug on it to try it out. Any recommend actions on kits? I see they have a bunch of electric kits on eBay, they compare them to the older craftsman kit. Any thoughts?

I have the old eastwood kit.  It is single voltage. I believe the new ones are dual voltage.  Any kit will probably work fine.  Buy your powder
anywhere but eastwood. They are too expensive. The only thing I get from eastwood is the plastic containers to hold the powder. Also, they
tell you the powder only last so long, but I have some that is 5-6 years old and it still shots fine. Just keep it sealed and dry. It is super easy to
do.  You can get pretty much any color.

I ended up buying a craftsman airless kit on ebay for 53$ shipped brand new.  Somehting cheap to play around with to learn about it.  Any advice on where to look for powders at? I really want to eventually do a set of cases I have.

Look on ebay or try pendry powder coating. You can get a 1lb of powder for 10-15 dollars. I don't know how the airless one works, but be prepared for powder to go everywhere. I take the oven grate and set on top of a garbage can. That way the powder ends up in the trash and i take the grate with the parts and slide it in the oven.

My set up is from caswell plating. Works good for me but sandblasting sucks a$$. I've found to use paint stripper first then follow up with sand or glass bead is the fastest. I use a standard home oven but for longer stuff like extended swingarms I cut a race can sized hole in the door and used a insulated race fuel can to extend the door out. It gets strange looks and comments like what's a can of fuel coming out of your oven for...but it works. For hanging parts, I took one of the extra oven grates and hung it 1" from the top of the oven so hooks and wire are easy to hang. Good luck.
